• Ryland Coe of Tarkio and Charles Sheppard of North Kansas City have purchased from Keith Hurst the business known as the Tarkio Truck and Tractor and will take possession November 1. Mr. Hurst first came into the employ of the International Harvester Company here in March of 1936. He bought the business in August of 1943 and has since built the company into one of the strong businesses of Tarkio.
• O.B. Mendenhall arrived Monday to begin his duties as agent of the C.B.&Q. station in Tarkio.
• More than 300 Atchison County farmers attended the Balanced Farming Field Day held by the Agriculture Extension Service September 1 on Albert Rolf’s farm five miles east and two miles north of Westboro.
• With nine oil wells already producing very satisfactorily at the Cities Service-discovered Tarkio pool of Missouri five miles southeast of this community, the oil company is again preparing to drill near Tarkio. This time it will be on the Mrs. M. B. Giffen land four miles north and two miles west of Tarkio. The land is known as Ranch 1.

• The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office released a bulletin to the highway patrol to look for a car with New York license plates after the occupants shot a bystander who had stopped to help what he thought were stranded motorists. Robert Phillips of Hamburg, Iowa, was shot on 275 near the Iowa line. The bullet passed through Mr. Phillips’ rib cage. He was treated at the Hamburg Hospital and released.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hurst of Tarkio have been on a unique two-week tour of England, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. They, along with 135 other farmers headed by Mo. Ruralist’s editor Cordell Tindall, not only toured the regular sites, but visited farms and attended special agricultural presentations.
• The first appearance of the Tarkio High School Band will be September 15 at the Applejack Festival Parade in Nebraska City, Nebraska. This year the band has 58 members. Drum majorette is Kim McIntosh and Ed Roberts is the band director.
• Lawrence Victor “Skip” Shear has been named the Tarkio College Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education. He is a 1967 TC graduate.

• The Tarkio American Legion Post held its annual Labor Day Horseshoe Tournament September 7 at Niedermeyer Park in Tarkio.
• The Tarkio Community Garden Club has named Yards of the Month for September in Tarkio. Those selected included: Vic and Marcialea Graybill, 908 N. 6th St.; Forrest and Sharon Alderman, 1201 McNary St.; Art and Gerry Tohill, 106 S. 10th St.; Jack Yates, 901 Elm St.; Donald and Carol Jagger, 512 S. 10th St.; and The Flower Mill on Main Street.
• Stan Butt, manager of Tarkio Pelleting and Feeders Grain Corporation, both in Tarkio, is concerned about this year’s crop situation. Stan said that the markets are in a terrible slump and that buyers are wanting to pay less for their grain. A shortage in storage is expected. Farmers have already been calling in to reserve space and Stan said that his facilities will be more than full.
