September 24, 1948

• The Mail has been asked to make a change of address for Allen L. Pierce, who is now stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He is flying supplies into Berlin.

• Mergenthaler produced the first successful linotype machine in 1884. Nowadays, no well-equipped printing office does without a linotype. The Mail has two.

• The Ralph Greer American Legion Post is sponsoring a dance September 30 at the Memorial Building for the benefit of the post’s dinner service sets. The Legion is buying 300 sets of dinnerware to have a sufficient quantity of dishes and silverware available for serving large crowds.

• Nine Rock Port businessmen made an air trip to West Plains and Carthage, Missouri, and Harrison, Arkansas, last Thursday. They were met by newspapermen and other businessmen who made them welcome and showed them their radio set-ups.

• Rock Port High School Band is raising funds to purchase uniforms. They will hold a cake sale on Main Street October 2 and will play a concert.

• Coach Richard Hinderliter has a football squad of some 50 players for the current season. His first string men are Arnold Meyerkorth (LE), Reed Burke (LT), Jim Cooper (LG), Bill Fischer (C), Laverne Noah (RG), Merlyn Madron (RT), Loren Ebert (RE), Wike Scamman (Q), Ted Shaw (FB), Charles Knierim (RH), and Harold Melvin (LH).

September 20, 1973

• The Atchison County Mail had its share of excitement September 17 sometime during the noon hour. The hose on the air conditioner at the back of the building broke and started leaking ammonia gas. The air conditioner then caught fire. Delmas Howell, foreman at the Mail office, with the help of Rep. Hardin Cox, put the fire out with fire extinguishers.

• Long’s Beauty Shop, owned by Mrs. Kenneth Long, Sr., Rock Port, had five $1 bills stolen September 14 some time between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. The method of entry was through the back door.

• Clark Ford-Mercury of Rock Port advertises that the 1974 Fords are here: Ford, Thunderbird, Mustang, and Pinto. Stop by Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22, and check out the new vehicles and dine on coffee and donuts.

• The Atchison County 4-H Livestock Show was held September 13 and was very successful despite cool temperatures and drizzly rain. Judy Stanton received the grand champion steer award with her Charolais.

September 17, 1998

• The Rock Port Blue Jays trounced the Hamburg Wildcats 69-0 on the gridiron, improving their record to 2-0. Senior Reid Hunter set a new school record of 255 rushing yards. The old record of 229 yards was held by Dana Brion and was set in 1995 against Bishop LeBlond.

• Larry Abbott with the State Highway Department was mowing along Highway 136 east of Rock Port when the asphalt gave way. The tractor he was driving turned over and came to rest on its side. Abbott suffered minor injuries.

• “Jamaican Me Crazy” is the theme for the Rock Port Homecoming. Homecoming queen candidates are Kymm Gayler, Cindi Gayler, and Billie Hackenewerth, and king candidates are Reid Hunter, Josh Zach, and Bryce Bunton.
