• Virgil Harbison, who has many times invited students to a free show and has been helpful in other college projects, was presented season tickets to all Tarkio College athletic events at a snake dance and bonfire pep rally held September 29.
• The Tarkio College annual, the Tarkiana, will be run by the following staff members this year: Joe Barr, editor; Margaret Adams, assistant editor; Robert McNulty, business manager; Charles Dick, art editor; Mary Cagley, write-up editor; Iris Teachout, daily grind editor; Randy Bentley, sports editor; and Olin Kettelkamp, picture editor.
• Mrs. Thelma Dunlap at her home in Tarkio and her son, Pfc. Paul Dunlap in Japan, enjoyed a telephone conversation (the time here 3:00 a.m. Wednesday). Pfc. Dunlap is stationed 90 miles from Tokyo in the Army Engineer Corps. He has been in Japan since June 21. Mrs. Dunlap said she heard satisfactorily except for choppy sounds.
• M.W. “Bill” Chilcote, former news editor of the Tarkio Avalanche, has purchased a Maryville weekly newspaper, the Nodaway County Tribune, and the former Tribune Publishing Company from Mrs. J. Fred Hull, widow of the founder.
October 11, 1973
• George Nixon of Tarkio won first place in the 10-year-old class in the zone punt, pass, and kick contest Saturday at East Hills in St. Joseph, Missouri. He received a trophy and the right to participate in the district competition, which will be held at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City this Saturday.
• The Tarkio High School Band came home with the second place trophy in the Class B competition of the 18th annual Clarinda Band Jamboree.
• The 1973 Tarkio College Homecoming will feature the school’s 90th anniversary as its theme of the weekend festivities.
• A high temperature of 83 degrees was reached on the eighth after a low of 38 degrees on the fifth.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “The Atchison County Museum board is proud of its latest acquisition, a buggy donated by Bill Bonus and Harry Broermann was largely responsible for its restoration. The buggy was purchased around 1914 by Bill’s father from the McMahan Hardware in Fairfax, Missouri.
• Jon Halvorsen, 23, of Olathe, Kansas, was flying his airplane home from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, October 2, when he began to experience engine trouble. He landed the plane in Winford Wennihan’s bean field approximately 2 1/4 miles north of Tarkio and on the east side of Highway 59. Jon managed a perfect power off landing.
• A grand opening celebration will be held Thursday and Friday, October 15 and 16, for the Tarkio Petro Pumps, located next to Martin Car Wash. Refreshments will be served and people will be able to sign up for a petro card at that time. A ribbon cutting will be held Thursday with the Chamber of Commerce.
• A new ATM was installed at the Mercantile Bank of Northwest Missouri in Tarkio. It is located behind the bank.
