A crash occurred at 9:38 a.m. on 180th Street, west of Route O, two miles north of Tarkio, Missouri, September 24, 2023. A 2022 Ford F350, driven by Don B. Hurst, 41, of Fairfax, Missouri, was heading eastbound on 180th and a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Mary K. Ryan, 57, of Tarkio was turning west at the intersection onto 180th street. The Hurst vehicle struck the rear left portion of the Ryan vehicle in the uncontrolled intersection.

The Equinox came to rest on its wheels facing south off the north side of the road. The Ford F350 came to rest on its wheels facing east on 180th. Ryan, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax. Hurst did not report any injuries at the scene. The Equinox was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing. The Ford F350 was driven from the scene.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper V. P. Wiley, who was assisted by Cpl. K. L. Ebersold, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance Service.

A sleepy driver crashed a semi at 7:17 a.m. September 25, 2023, on U.S. 59, 1.5 miles north of Tarkio, Missouri. Frank A. Roberts, 35, of Kansas City, Missosuri, was driving a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia southbound on U.S. 59 when he fell asleep. The semi traveled off the right side of the roadway, overturned, and came to rest on its passenger side facing southwest.

Roberts, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax in Fairfax. The semi sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by All City Tow.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper R.A. Matthews, who was assisted by Trooper M. W. Neely, CVO J. W. Rhoades, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance Service.

A Table Rock, Nebraska, man was injured after crashing a John Deere 8R410 tractor on Route U in Atchison County at 3:00 p.m. September 25, 2023. The wreck occurred as the tractor, driven by Stephan F. Friedenthal, 53, was eastbound on Route U, five miles southwest of Rock Port, Missouri, and went off of the south side of the roadway. The right tire of the tractor’s towed unit became disabled, causing the towed unit to turn onto its side. The vehicle returned to the roadway and came to a controlled stop.

Friedenthal, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was taken by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Community Hospital-Fairfax. The tractor sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene. The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. K. F. Jeffers, who was assisted by Trooper V. P. Wiley, the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance Service.

A Hamburg, Iowa, driver was seriously injured in a crash in Atchison County October 4, 2023, at 12:38 a.m. The wreck occurred as a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Owen L. Hobart, 23, was travelling south on U.S. 59 four miles north of Craig, Missouri, when the vehicle travelled off the left side of the roadway. The Silverado struck an embankment and came to rest on its wheels facing west.

Hobart, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by an Atchison-Holt ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Chevy Silverado was totaled and towed from the scene by Double M Towing.

The accident was investigated by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper J.D. Schmedding, who was assisted by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance Service.
