A dear friend, pastor, and my mentor taught me that each one of us, as Christians, should have a three-minute witness, for those just-in-case-we-need-it moments, like if you are on an elevator with someone, and you see a chance to share Jesus.

My mentor decided one day that we should practice my elevator testimony. It did not go well. Every time I would start, she would interrupt, “I’ve heard of this Jesus guy, who is he?” I would start to answer, just to get interrupted again, “How can there be three people in one? I don’t get it.” Well, if you would just give me a chance, and then I would start again. Finally, my mentor blurted out, “Well, I’ve heard all of this and I don’t believe any of it. What do think of that?” I did not realize I was in character to the extent I was. And out of my mouth came, “One of us is right, and when you find yourself roasting in hell, please remember, I tried to help you, and I’m sorry you wouldn’t listen.” MIKE DROP. Reverend Ellen Hoff sat very still, and very quiet for a minute, then she said, “Bill, please, never say that to someone. That is not how you evangelize.”

So, how do you evangelize? “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15).

I have been watching all the tragedy in the world unfolding in the news this week, when suddenly I was struck by this one thought. A lot of these people who died, died without knowing Jesus Christ. As Christians, that should be cause for sadness, tears, and a wake-up call to tell those we can. It’s not too late.

I started this article by giving you an example of how not to witness. So, how should we witness? Since that practice run, so many years ago, I have learned the best way to witness is to live our lives mirroring Christ. Jesus forgave us. We can forgive others. Jesus gave us a second chance. We can give others a second chance. Jesus told us of His promise for eternal life. We can tell others of that promise. Jesus loves us. We can love others. Simply put, make a friend, be a friend, introduce your friend to Jesus. Practice your elevator witness folks, you may be someone’s last chance.
