For the first round of District 6 football action, the Mound City Panthers traveled to Blue Jay Stadium on Friday, October 27, 2023.
Rock Port would get the ball to start the game, but the offense was not ready to play as they would struggle to get things going in their first two drives. This resulted in Mound City scoring early, giving them a 16 point head start.
The Jays would pull things together and score 28 points in the first half to Mound City’s 46 points. With quarterback Cade Makings out with an injury, this put Corbyn Jakub behind center. Jakub would hit receiver Jack Meyerkorth to give the Jays a much needed spark. Meyerkorth would catch a quick out and take it to the Mound City 32 yard line. Two plays later, Meyerkorth would go 27 yards for the touchdown. Jakub’s two point conversion was good, making the score 8-16 Mound City.
The Panthers would drive the ball down to the seven yard line where the Jays would stop them on a fourth and one. Dakota Evans and Jakub would help the Jays move the ball to the 30 yard line before bobbling a snap and turning it over to Mound City, giving them a short field. The Panthers would score three plays later to make the score 8-24. Dakota Evans would make them pay for kicking the ball deep as he returned it 67 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 16-24. Mound City would take some time off the clock on their next drive and score, making the score 16-30, but Dakota Evans wasn’t done yet as he would return the Panther kick-off 78 yards for a touchdown. The score was now 22-30 Mound City.
The Panthers wasted no time answering back and putting 8 more points on the board. After learning their lesson on kicking it deep, Rock Port would get possession of the ball on the 36 yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Corbyn Jakub would break outside and go 31 yards to the end zone. This would be the final score for Rock Port in the first half. Mound City would score once more to bring the halftime score to 28 to 46.
The second half was more scoring with Rock Port never being able to get within 10 or less points. The final score ended up being 54 to 66 Panthers. Good luck to the Panthers moving forward.
