• Although it’s not the complete total, so far the proceeds from the Baptist-Presbyterian Lord’s Acre sale and festival held in Fairfax Saturday total nearly $6,000.
• Everett Deardorff has been appointed Fairfax City Clerk to succeed Harry Emrick, who resigned at a meeting of the board of aldermen last week.
• Mrs. Birdie Jaquet and her son-in-law, Lewis Best, both of St. Joseph, Missouri, have purchased Rinehart’s Cafe, but will not take possession of the business until January 1. The sale includes the business equipment and stock, but Mr. Rinehart will continue to own the building.
• Morris Sloan returned last week from Alaska, where he has been working since early summer with a crew of surveyors north of Fairbanks, laying out roads and highways. He took his car to Alaska and traveled the Alcan Highway. The distance to Fairbanks is about 4,200 miles. He had to fight ice and snow on the return trip.

• At Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax: 8 16-oz. bottles of Coca-Cola, 89¢; 1 lb. can of Folgers Coffee, 89¢; Dove liquid detergent 22-oz. bottle, 39¢; 20 California naval oranges, $1; Hy-Klas pure Florida orange juice, 3 12-oz. cans for $1; and Ore-Ida 2-lb. bag of frozen tater tots, 49¢.
• The Missouri Heart Association in cooperation with schools and the Atchison County Health Center will be screening for possible heart defects next week. Only children in the 4th grade will participate in getting the phonocardioscan.
• Because of new government allotments, the price of an extra serving of milk in the school lunch program will be lowered to 4¢ per serving starting December 1. The milk has been selling for 10¢ per serving the past several months.
• The Fairfax Community Club plans to have the Christmas street lights and decorations go up as usual November 26. However, because of the energy crisis, the lights will not be burned until near Christmas.
• Mrs. Hazel Thomson, Atchison County Cancer Society President, accepted an outstanding achievement citation on behalf of the county organization for its 3-star success. Mrs. Cecil Corbin was also awarded a 30-year service citation.

• The Northwest Missouri Regional Solid Waste Management District recognized the Fairfax Elementary sixth grade, which is establishing a school-wide recycling program. Recycling bins have been purchased and will be placed in all of the school’s classrooms and near sources of recyclables.
• The annual Fairfax Barnwarming was held Friday, November 13. The evening began when students from FHA and FFA took a hay ride and enjoyed roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a bonfire. A square dance was then held back at the school. Danielle Beck was chosen as the Chapter Sweetheart and Nate Easley was chosen as the Favorite Fellow.
• Carol Ball and Gloria Bolton, both of Fairfax, went to Sidney, Iowa, to visit Mary Warnstaff at the Sidney Health Care Center. Mary was celebrating her 102nd birthday that day.
• High school seniors have been selected from their respective schools to receive the annual DAR Good Citizen Awards. They are Rob Sefrit of Fairfax, Dustin Carpenter of Rock Port, and Jamie Johnson of Tarkio.
• Roger and Lou Ann Pennel, owners of R & L Grocery, spent the weekend replacing freezers so that by Monday morning, the store would once again be ready to serve the community.
