November 19, 1948
• Rock Port is to have a new hardware store shortly after the first of the year. It will be known as the Rock Port Hardware Co., Inc. and will be managed by Robert Fay, formerly of Tarkio. The company has leased the former post office building, which is being vacated by the Holden Appliance Co.
• The Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department has used its own funds to purchase another siren for giving alarms. The one now on the fire station will be moved further south, while the new one will be placed somewhere near the north end of Main Street.
• A contracting firm is at work at the Brownville Bridge sandblasting and pointing up the big piers of the bridge where erosion has been brought about by the action of the waters of the Missouri River. This is the first repair of the bridge since it was put into service several years ago.
• Asked what he thought of the two candidates for state office, an enlightened voter replied, “Well, when I look at them, I’m thankful only one of them can get elected.”
• Doubtless the largest producer of corn in Atchison County this year is George Opp, who had an acreage of from 1,500 to 1,600 acres planted in southern Atchison County and northern Holt County and expects a total crop in the neighborhood of 100,000 bushels. This Missouri River bottom ground was covered with a heavy growth of willows little more than a year ago.

• Bill McEnaney of Colliersville, Tennessee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom McEnaney of Westboro, Missouri, will be performing his trick riding and roping at the International Finals Rodeo November 29-December 2 at Tingley Colisseum, Albuquerque, New Mexico. His wife, Nancy, will also perform. They have performed in all 50 states and Mexico and Bill represented the United States at the World’s Fair in Montreal, Canada, in 1970.
• The Honor Society members will be walking 12 miles November 17 for Cerebral Palsy. The walk will be made by nine students of Rock Port High School. They will walk to Langdon, eat lunch, then walk back to Rock Port.
• Mr. Nathan “Bob” Morrison, lifelong resident of Atchison County and native of the Watson community, died at his home in Westboro November 9. He was born May 7, 1897, in Watson. He entered the Army on February 4, 1918, and served during WWI. He and his wife, Dora, farmed in the Watson and Westboro areas over the years.

• Plans are underway to initiate a Hurricane Mitch Relief Fund in our community with the combined help of area churches, clubs, organizations and individuals. The victims are in Nicaragua and neighboring countries in Central America.
• The Physics class and Principles of Technology class took a field trip to the Pella windows factory and Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa.
• Funds from “Operation Jason” have been given to Alan Herbst. The son of Sonja Caufield of Tarkio, Alan was recently diagnosed with a rare disease called Perthes Disease.
• The Rock Port Blue Jays fell to the Maysville Wolverines 28-42 in the District football final. The game was a back and forth contest until Maysville scored two touchdowns late in the game, one with only two minutes left, to seal the deal.
