December 3, 1948
• Miss Madolyn McFarland, Eldon, Missouri, is a new member of the Tarkio Avalanche staff, having begun her duties as news writer this week. Miss McFarland is a graduate of Christian College for Women in Columbia, Missouri, and the school of journalism of the University of Missouri and was last employed with The Press Publications, Elmhurst, Illinois.
• Santa Claus and his reindeer have moved into town and now have a prominent perch atop the Main and Fourth Street intersection for the season. Main Street between Second and Fifth streets are now arched with ropes of evergreen and business houses are decked with Yuletide decorations.
• Don Harmon, farm worker from Virginia, was taken to the Hamburg, Iowa, hospital Tuesday with injuries suffered in a tractor accident two miles east of Westboro, Missouri.
• Final rites for Flight Officer Reuben Gorman Allen, Jr., formerly of Westboro, Missouri, were held at the Christian Church in Weston, Missouri. Flight Officer Allen lost his life while returning from his third bombing mission over Yugoslavia March 4, 1945. His death was attributed to oxygen mask failure.
• President and Mrs. M. Earle Collins of Tarkio College greeted more than 400 guests Thanksgiving day when they held an open house at their home at the head of Main Street in Tarkio.
December 6, 1973
• William Mansfield, Assistant Professor of Music at Tarkio College, will present an organ recital Sunday, December 9, in Leitch Chapel. The recital is to be a rededication to mark the recent rebuilding and repair of the organ.
• At the November 27 meeting of the Tarkio Rotary Club, Don Morgan, program chairman for the month of November, introduced the featured speakers, Miss Jelena Jovanovic and her brother, Misa Jovanovic. The two are students at Tarkio College and are from Yugoslavia via the Schutz School in Egypt.
• A high temperature of 66 degrees on the 2nd left people unprepared for the season’s first winter storm the following day. A low of 25 degrees was also recorded on the 28th.
• Winter struck with a vengeance Monday night when the first snow and ice storm of the season crippled the area. Power and phone lines all over were downed as ice laden trees dropped and high winds downed utility poles and lines. Over 40 poles were down east of Tarkio.
December 3, 1998
• The students at Beautiful Beginnings Preschool and Day Care have been learning about the letter “B.” They decided to have a balloon launch. The balloons were donated by the Flower Mill.
• Norman and Phillis Kemper will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a get-together at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Westboro, Missouri, Saturday, December 12.
• The Tarkio Elementary third graders held a Grandparents’ Day program November 25. They sang songs, performed a skit on the first Thanksgiving, and square danced.
