December 3, 1948
• Mrs. Henry Barger of New Hope district north of Rock Port suffered severe cuts to her throat Thanksgiving evening when she fainted and fell into a bookcase with a glass front. The broken glass cut her neck and she lost a lot of blood.
• Mr. and Mrs. John Schnegelberger of Langdon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving day at the home of their son, Henry, at Nishnabotna. Mary Pabst married John Schnegelberger in Gilead, Nebraska, on November 24, 1898. Their eight surviving children were present for their anniversary, the first time in 27 years that they were all together.
• The country home of Bob Thomas on what is generally known as the C. H. Geveden place, was badly damaged by fire about three o’clock Monday morning. The fire started from a defective flue.
• Wm. Cheesman suffered the complete destruction of his automobile by a mainline Burlington freight train about 11:00 p.m. last Friday evening at Langdon. As Cheesman drove toward the Langdon bridge, his wheels missed the railroad crossing planks and stalled on the tracks. The train, which does not make a stop there, was traveling at 60 miles per hour or more when it hit the car, which Cheesman had fled.

• Deer hunters took a total of 90 bucks in Atchison County during the nine-day firearms season November 17-25. Among the local hunters who bagged bucks were Jim Shelton, 18, and Darrell Shelton, 20. They harvested 9 and 10-point bucks respectively just 30 minutes and less than 100 yards apart on the second day.
• Cox’s Conglomerations: “Right after the war while I was in Japan, the taxis over there ran on charcoal. It worked and while they were waiting for a fare they roasted marshmallows, etc.”
• Specials at Greenley’s Market in Rock Port were: Del-Monte catsup, 14 oz. bottles, 4 for $1; a pound of Seitz Cornbelt bologna for 89¢; a head of lettuce weighing a pound, 15¢; and C & H powdered or brown sugar, 2 lb. bag for 43¢.
• Christmas decorations but no lights is the policy for the Board of Public Works’ Christmas decorations program this year.
• An artist’s conception of what the Rock Port business houses could look like was the topic of discussion at the November 21 meeting at the Coach House in Rock Port. The contract for work by artist Allen Nelson has been signed with his work to be financed by both banks jointly.

• The Rock Port Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its second annual Holiday Tree Tour at the Star Hill Prairie Art Center beginning Friday, December 4. Everyone is invited to take part. Proceeds will be utilized for youth and scholarship awards.
• The Atchison County Extension Council is hosting an open house at the new Atchison County Outreach/Extension Center on Thursday, December 3. The building was named the Velma Houts Fair Building in memory of Mrs. Houts, who was a longtime 4-H leader.
• Vandals and thieves were busy this weekend by breaking into the Rock Port R-II Schools and leaving damage and mess behind. They got their hands on at least one cash box and the school estimates the loss and damage at around $2,000-$3,000.
