December 31, 1948

• Most of the floor for the lower story of the hospital has been poured and crews have been busy installing parts of the heating plants. Others are doing the electrical wiring and plumbing. On the second floor, partitions are being built and door and window cases being fitted. Coping is being laid around the top of the building.

• The Fairfax school band is soon to be sporting brand new uniforms. The 52 uniforms will be navy blue with green and white trim.

• Old Santa was greeted with plenty of snow this year so had no excuse not to use his sled and reindeer on Christmas. Snow fell here most of the day Friday and reached blizzard proportions late in the afternoon and early evening. There was some five or six inches of snow on the ground Christmas day. The mercury dropped to 19 degrees below zero, an all-time record for the month of December.

• The Forum is in its 56th year and is printing its 53rd issue, a combination rare indeed as ordinarily there are only 52 issues per year. The Forum has 53 issues in 1948 because there were 53 Fridays and the paper publication day is Friday. The next issue will be volume 57, number 1, but the Forum will be changing its publication day to Thursday.

January 3, 1974

• The Forum subscription rate has been increased to $5.00. The cost of counter copies and the price of want ads have also increased.

• Community Hospital was filled to capacity to start the new year. Seasonal illnesses associated with cold winter weather as well as elective hospitalizations delayed until after the holidays combined to make a full house. 

• An intensive search of a Boehm Rest Home resident in the Belleview community ended Wednesday when the man was spotted by a plane. The resident wandered away from the home about 8:00 p.m. Christmas night and wasn’t spotted until 11:00 December 26. The man was taken to the hospital in Fairfax suffering from exhaustion and exposure.

• Everyone is reminded to turn their clocks forward one hour before going to bed next Saturday night when national daylight savings time goes into effect Sunday, January 6.

• R&L Grocery in Fairfax is advertising the following specials: Coke, 2 liter for 99¢ or 24 packs for $5.49; Pringles chips, 99¢ per can; Betty Crocker Tuna and Hamburger Helper, $1.29 each; boneless prime rib roast, $4.29 per pound; and Totino’s Party Pizzas, 99¢ each.

• The Fairfax Kiwanis Club met December 22 at Community Hospital in Fairfax with 14 members and one guest present. Dennis Athen gave the program on firemen gear. It was reported that Santa handed out candy at the Fairfax School. Charlie Norton and Norman Simmons represented the Kiwanis Club and Optimist Club by passing out the candy the clubs provide.

• The x-ray department won the Christmas decorating contest at Community Hospital in Fairfax. 

• Oswald Ag is the newest business in the Fairfax area. Marshal Oswald began his own ag business and will be working with Phil Yocum of Yocum Fertilizer. Marshal will custom apply chemicals with his Willmar Eagle 8100.

• A special meeting of the Fairfax City Council was held December 21. The purpose was to discuss that the one well the city is running on was making noise over the weekend. A bearing was out of the shaft drive and was not rebuildable. After much discussion, the board voted to purchase a submersible pump that could be installed within days at the cost of $8,100.
