• The Rock Port soda fountain in the Bob Underwood building, which has for a time been owned by Chris Simon and John Gregg in partnership, is now the sole property of Mr. Simon, who purchased Mr. Gregg’s interest a while back. Mrs. Gertrude Dalrymple is in charge of this popular refreshment place.

• A typical midsummer storm hit the area Monday with rain, lightning, and thunder. Gutters ran deep with water and the streets were slipperier than soft soap and the day was generally miserable.

• In response to requests by a number of interested persons, a night school for adults is being arranged in the Rock Port schools by Superintendent Morrison. The commerce teacher, John Peck, will present a course in typewriting. Tuition will be 75¢ per week.

• The Hiway Super IGA Market on Highway 275 north of Rock Port advertised the following specials: Del Monte fruit cocktail, 53¢; Skippy peanut butter, 1 lb. jar, 39¢; Smucker’s grape jelly, 10 oz. glass, 19¢; and Sunny Morn coffee, lb., 42¢.

January 3, 1974

• The decision whether to ration gas or not won’t be made for at least six weeks as fuel supplies are assessed, energy chief William E. Simon said. He has, however, ordered a three-month nationwide supply of coupons be printed just in case.

• Ron Sobotka, Maryville, Missouri, is the new service manager and shop foreman for Conley Bennington Chevrolet, Rock Port.

• Featured as Citizens of Tomorrow were Dayne and Jennifer, children of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Sutter, Fairfax, and Mike and Lydia, children of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Pfeil, Rock Port.

• The Tarkio College Owls swept past three opponents to capture the championship of the Chadron State College Holiday Tournament. Jim Martin, who tallied 58 points and grabbed 50 rebounds, was named the most valuable player in the tournament and to the All Tournament Team. Mark Dalbey hit 19 of 33 shots and scored 42 points for the three games, was also named to the All Tournament Team.

December 31, 1998

• Josh Zach, son of Richard and Sandy Zach, is the Rock Port Optimist Club’s January Teenager of the Month.

• Recent college graduates include Phillip Eilers, son of John and Elaine Eilers, Langdon, Missouri, and Daniel Reed Smith, son of James and Paula Smith, Fairfax, and Steve and Kitty Irvine, Rock Port. Phillip graduated with distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Daniel graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

• The Adopt-a-Family project was once again a big success. Clubs and individuals reached deep into their pockets to make sure those in need had a special Christmas.

• Showing at the Pioneer 3 Theatre in Nebraska City, Nebraska: “Stepmom,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Mighty Joe Young.”
