• If you think Rock Port was not represented at President Truman’s inaugural you’re mistaken. Rob Roy Greenley, a midshipman at the Naval Academy at Annapolis, took part in the parade as part of the ceremonies of the day.
• Atchison County’s five banks carried a record amount of deposits, $11,268,418.35, on December 31, according to statements published last week.
• John J. Wright of the Wright Motor Co. has just returned from Kansas City, where he attended a leader meeting and preview of the pacemaking new 1949 Chevrolet passenger cars. The new cars will first be shown to the public at the dealer’s showroom here on January 22, 1949.
• The Rock Port Market advertised the following specials: Butternut coffee, 51¢ per pound; Miracle Whip salad dressing, quart, 59¢; Gerber’s baby food, 3 tins for 25¢; Hershey’s cocoa, half pound package, 21¢; and C&H pure cane sugar, 95¢ for a 10 pound sack.
January 17, 1974
• Jake McCall has opened Rock Port’s newest business establishment, a towing and repair service for trucks and autos. The building is located at the junction of Hwy.136 and 275 just west of Rock Port.
• Rock Port’s snow fighters made quick work of piles of snow that fell Wednesday and Thursday as the city crew, along with extra men and machines, worked around the clock. According to Gene Bunn, city personnel director, it cost the city $275 to employee the extra people and equipment needed just to scoop Main Street.
• A preliminary loan closing was held January 9 to provide funds to construct a water distribution system to Public Water Supply District No. 1 of Atchison County. The Farmers Home Administration has made a loan in the amount of $310,000 and provided grant funds of $115,900 to serve some 330 families in the rural areas of Rock Port, Watson, Langdon, and Phelps City.
• Charles E. Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Martin, Westboro, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Navy.
January 14, 1999
• The fire alarm sounded at Pleasant View Nursing Home on January 5, alerting the staff to a serious problem. The frigid conditions had frozen the inside sprinkler pipes, causing them to break above the laundry room area. The Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call and assisted in cleaning up the mess. The break caused an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 worth of damage to the facility.
• Mike Wennihan bowled a perfect game of 300 January 4 during Monday Night Mixed League at Blue Jay Bowl.
• McDonald’s featured the following “Students of the Week” at Rock Port Elementary: Sterling Horst, Dylan Harber, Matthew Sloop, Kari Sierks, Hayden Oswald, D.J. Shallenberger, Blair Floyd, Jalainey McMahon, Tarah Garst, Tyler Holmes, Ryan Parkhurst, Jayson Erdman, and Reven Herron.
