February 4, 1949
• The Colfax Farmers Mutual Insurance Company started its 61st year Wednesday. A small group of farmers from Colfax Township, who felt the need of cooperative insurance, met February 2, 1889, and appointed a committee to draft by-laws and policies for the formation of an insurance company. A meeting was held at the Morning Star Schoolhouse, six miles east of Tarkio, on February 16, 1889, and the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Colfax Township was organized. The name has since been changed to the Colfax Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Tarkio, Missouri.
• A The Tarkio theatre: “Blondie’s Reward,” “Rose of Santa Rosa,” “Meet Me At Dawn,” “Hills of Home,” and “Canon City.”
• The Tarkio Fire Department was called to a house fire at 205 Maple Street, owned by B.D. Guthrie. The firemen worked almost two hours in subzero temperatures to bring the fire under control. The story and a half house was built in 1880.
February 7, 1974
• Several members of Tarkio High School competed in the District Speech Contest in Maryville. A cutting from “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” skillfully performed by Mrs. Schmidt’s Senior English class, received a superior rating.
• The Tarkio High School Farm Structures class has completed a long line of projects, including a reconstructed wagon, eight feed bunks, a hay wagon, and an FFA sign for advertisement.
• Carl Bernstein, reporter for The Washington Post and one of the key news reporters who has covered and assisted in bringing information of Watergate to the public, will speak to the student body and faculty of Tarkio College and the public on February 12.
• The high for the week of 63 degrees was recorded on the 30th and the low of 4 degrees was recorded on the 4th.
• The First National Bank in Tarkio has purchased an unusual night scene of the David Rankin Mule Barn by local artist Rod McGehee. The work was done during a design course at Tarkio College.
• Two Tarkio College students were killed in a car crash on U.S. 136 between Tarkio and Rock Port. The driver lost control on the curve causing the vehicle to slide down the highway sideways for 180 feet, then go into the ditch and slide another 80 feet before it struck a utility pole.
• The Tarkio High School Brain Bowl team will be competing in the KXCV Brain Bowl broadcast Wednesday, February 13.
February 4, 1999
• The Tarkio Indian girls’ basketball team improved to 18-0 overall and 3-0 in Highway 275 Conference play with a 53-40 victory over the West Nodaway Rockets.
• Ask Elsie Fae – “When I stated in the paper that I might devote a column to my views on the State of the Union, several people thought I was referring to the marriage of Bill and Hillary. What marriage? What union? If it ever was – it’s a thing of the past…She would move out, but she can’t find another house she likes as well. (Of course, if I had a house with a cook, I wouldn’t move either.)”
• Christina Kerr of Tarkio has been accepted for membership in the United States Collegiate Wind Band, a National High School Honors Band which will make a three-week tour of Europe next July.
• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Eric Livengood’s Edward Jones Investments office in Tarkio.
