February 4, 1949
• Honoring the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Umbarger, an open house will be held at their home in Tarkio, Sunday, February 6. Daniel David Umbarger and Joan Bennington were married February 3, 1889, at Sparta, North Carolina.
• Two bulldozers have been sent from this area to the snowbound regions of Nebraska to help in opening the roads. One has been sent by the S.J. Peterson Construction company and the other by E.R. Crawford. They will work under the direction of the army engineers.
• Mrs. Dolph Miller has received word that the body of her son, Max Miller, is enroute home from Italy. Max was killed May 18, 1944, in the battle of Cassino and his body was buried in a military cemetery in that theater.
• B.P. Hunter entered the mercantile business in Fairfax February 1, 1913, and he has been in business continuously since. In celebration of the anniversary, the Hunter Stores are to hold special sales in both stores Friday and Saturday of this week.
February 7, 1974
• Mr. and Mrs. H.Q. Gomel returned Monday from an eight-day Caribbean cruise which Mr. Gomel earned through the Tekseed Corn Company. They visited St. Thomas, Martinique, Trinidad, Caracas, and Curacao.
• The City of Fairfax took delivery on a new 110 watt two-way radio unit last Friday. The radio has been installed in Marshal Harrington’s car for direct communication with other law enforcement officials in the county.
• A semi-trailer hauling a powdered cattle supplement was northbound on the curve south east of Fairfax on Hwy. 59 when it overturned, spilling the cargo onto the highway. The truck received extensive damage and the driver was taken to the local hospital.
• Kiwanians got a lesson in first aid at Tuesday’s luncheon meeting from Mrs. Karen Ireland, director of nursing at Fairfax hospital. The meeting was attended by nearly 40 members and two other guests besides Mrs. Ireland.

• The kindergarten students at Fairfax R-3 celebrated the 100th day of school Monday, February 1. They counted 100 pennies, read a book about a snake that was 100 inches long, and they had to find Hershey Kisses hidden around the room while wearing their 100-shaped glasses.
• Amanda Wheeler and Kirk Hawkins were crowned Fairfax Basketball Homecoming Queen and King Friday, January 29. Both Fairfax High School basketball teams were victorious that evening over the Mound City Panthers. The After Prom parents raffled off a big decorated cookie and it was won by Pam O’Riley of Fairfax.
• The Careers Class at Fairfax High School participated in a job shadow day Tuesday, February 2, with local businesses in Fairfax. Students job shadowing included: Stacey Hendrix at the Fairfax Forum, Mary Chastain at KG Buds, Traci Davis in the physical therapy department at Community Hospital, and Jessica Ray in the radiology department at Community Hospital.
• Dr. James K. Hunter visited the Early Childhood class at Fairfax R-3 on Thursday, January 28. He brought his medical bag and showed the students the different items he carries and explained what they are used for. He also talked about the care he gives to children when they come into the office for a checkup or when they are sick. He also explained how a cast is applied to a broken bone.
