February 11, 1949
• R.A. Powell, who has operated a shoe repair shop in one of the West buildings for some months, closed the shop the first of the week.
• Remember when one of the things the taxpayer looked forward to each spring was a packet of free garden seeds from your congressman in Washington? Nowadays, instead of getting something free from Washington, you are asked to send something. How times have changed!
• An artificially inseminated dairy cow belonging to Walter Smith, who farms near Blanchard, gave birth to three calves on January 20. Two died shortly after birth, but Smith believes all would have survived if he or a veterinarian had been on hand at the birth. The perfectly normal calves were born during below-zero weather.
• The Hamburg Reporter featured a “believe it or not” story about Will Viles having a peach tree that has been in bloom for almost two weeks.
• At least two Rock Port businesses were the victims of a shoplifter Saturday. The Gildersleeve & Simon drug store lost a camera and Bartholomew’s drug store reports the loss of an electric razor and a camera.
February 7, 1974
• Duane Fentiman won $1,000 for first place in the George Knopinski’s New Years Singles Tournament NKC Pro Bowl. Fentiman had 2473 handicap with 2253 scratch score. Rock Port was represented by eight bowlers out of the 380.
• Cox’s Conglomerations: “It seems Hank Stapels’ son-in-law got a new chain saw for the family for Christmas so they all went out and took a turn. They were satisfied until the next day, when they found that they had all gotten poison ivy from handling the wood.
• Mrs. Clarence (Grace) Freeman of Craig was hired to drive the OATS bus for Atchison and Holt county members.
• Charles W. Shaw resigned as mayor of Rock Port effective March 31 at Tuesday night’s city council meeting at city hall.
• Glen W. Allen of Maryville, driver for the ITT Continental Baking Co., was sitting behind the Central Cafe in Rock Port working on his records when a rifle barrel was poked into his cab. Seconds later, the gunman walked away with the big haul of $4 in cash, all that Mr. Allen had on him.
February 4, 1999
• McDonald’s presented its Employee of the Month award to Lois Peters. Lois has worked at McDonald’s for 14 months.
• Dorothy Bell celebrated her 91st birthday on Friday, January 29, at the Nutrition Site in Rock Port. Her daughter, Lois Wade, and son, Marvin Bell, served cake and ice cream to those who dined at the center.
• The 1999 Rock Port High School Basketball Homecoming Queen is Jennifer Clemens and King is Brent Miles. The 1999 Rock Port High School Wrestling Homecoming Queen is Aubrey Chamberlain and King is Chris Gebhards.
• Fifty-seven people donated blood at the Rock Port Community Blood Drive held January 28 at the United Methodist Church.
• Kerrie Beth Bash, the 2-year-old daughter of Pastor Allan and Pastor Karen Bash of Rock Port, officially became a citizen of the United States Thursday, January 21, 1999, at 11:50 a.m. Kerrie was born in China and came to the United States shortly after her birth.
