February 18, 1949

• The marriage vows of Miss Nell Cleveland and James W. Flanagan were exchanged before an altar banked with jonquils in the Episcopal Church of Altus, Oklahoma. The bridegroom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mac Flanagan of Fairfax, is a graduate of Fairfax High School class of 1941. He served throughout WWII as a paratrooper and took part in many of the major engagements in the European theatre, among them the D-Day invasion, and his picture with a captured Nazi flag became one of the most widely distributed newspaper photos taken from the events of June 6, 1944.

• For the entertainment of its friends and customers, the Craven Implement Co. is to hold a big, free family party at the Fairfax School auditorium February 18. Among the entertainers will be Joe Page, aristocrat of balance and thrills; Clifton & Woods, magical maniacs; Owen Hester, comedy dancer and impersonator of dancing stars; Mary Ann Province, queen of the accordion; and on the screen will be an Abbott & Costello comedy.

February 21, 1974

• Joseph D’Andrea, 86, died in St. Joseph, Missouri, March 16 after a lengthy illness. Joseph, a native of Milan, Italy, was one of the early directors of the band and music program at Fairfax school. He came to the United States to form his own band and was a friend and associate of John Phillip Sousa, the composer and band leader. After serving in the U.S, Army, he began his teaching career, which found him teaching in many of the schools in northwest Missouri.

• Ivan King, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Retired, died when his private plane crashed after takeoff from the family farm north of Maitland, Missouri, Saturday morning. King’s three children were flying with him. His 11-year-old son suffered a severe skull fracture and extensive fractures of both legs and left arm. His daughter Marcia, age 10, had a severe scalp laceration and daughter Amy, age 7, received minor lacerations.

• This time, the big ones didn’t get away. Don Kerr and Bill Oswald landed a couple of catfish weighing 38 and 40 pounds last week. Planning on catching carp, the veteran fishermen were surprised with a big haul of catfish.

• Mrs. Vivian Miller, Fairfax, was presented a 50-year membership gold pin by Calla Lily Camp No. 1545, Royal Neighbors of America, in a ceremony February 15 held in the home of Mrs. A. P. Brooks in Tarkio.

February 19, 1999

• The Fairfax FFA held a Sweetheart Dance February 13 at the school. Students chosen as royalty were: king – Tim Oswald; queen – Melinda Bradfield; prince – Nic Smith; and princess – Kara Kemerling.

• Several boys in Fairfax are building a seven room treehouse. When the weather is nice and school is out, you will find A.J. Harding, Troy Simmons, Michael Oswald, Curtis Grossman, Robbie Pester, and Kody Kemerling working on their masterpiece.

• Approximately 40 people attended an open forum discussing the school’s financial situation February 9. The low numbers of kids attending school has hurt the district dramatically.

• The Fairfax Sorosis members took a trip down memory lane when Gloria Bolton gave the program “Changes in fashion the last 100 years” at the meeting February 15. She brought her collection of period dresses, hats, and accessories and sang “Alice Blue Gown.” She also showed the wedding dress of Augusta Banks, who was married in 1896.
