• Rex Shandy’s International Harvester free show at the Memorial Building last Friday afternoon proved as interesting a piece of entertainment as many shows which cost you $1.50 admission. One of the dancers was said to have been as good as anything Fred Astaire furnishes in motion pictures.
• The hot lunch menus for Rock Port schools next week include salmon salad sandwich, spaghetti and meat balls, potatoes au gratin, barbecued beef on a bun, and chicken and noodles.
• Rock Port broke into the sports limelight in a big way last Saturday when a racehorse called Old Rockport won the $100,000 Santa Anita race in California. The owner of Saturday’s winning horse is Clifford Mooers of Lexington, Kentucky. Whether the horse was named after the Atchison County town remains uncertain.
• Rev. Ralph T. Boggs, pastor of the Baptist Church, and Mrs. Boggs are the parents of a daughter, Julie, born at St. Francis hospital in Maryville Wednesday, February 16.
• On a dark and stormy night, the brakeman signalled the engineer and dropped his lantern from the top of the box car to the ground. A passerby grabbed it and tossed it back up to him. In a few minutes, the engineer came rushing back and said, “Do that again!” “Do what?” asked the brakeman. “Jump from the ground to the top of the box car.”
February 21, 1974
• Mr. and Mrs. Ted Millsap returned home Friday following an eight day trip to Rome, Italy, and other points of interest.
• “The Miracle Worker” will be the senior class play at Rock Port High School. Cindy Markham will portray teacher Miss Annie Sullivan and Kathy Burke will be Helen Keller.
• Dr. Douglas C. Gallup, 55, a chiropractor in Rock Port since 1951, died February 18 after a lengthy illness. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and trained as a bomber pilot. Later he became an instructor pilot for the B-25 and A-26. He served in the China-Burma-India Theatre, flying 80 missions, and on three different occasions received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He held the rank of Captain until his honorable discharge.
• The flu epidemic in Rock Port is nearing an end as classes resumed at the school February 19 after a week of cancellations. Officials in the high school reported only 23 students were absent on Tuesday compared to 106 the week before.
February 18, 1999
• The Rock Port R-II Board of Education hired Richard E. Baldwin as superintendent. Currently, he is the secondary principal at Howard County R-II Schools in Glasgow, Missouri, and prior to that, he was the ag teacher at North Nodaway.
• Kim Bunton, owner of Cabin Fever, has donated her February shipment of Beanie Babies to the After Prom Committee. The committee will sell the Beanie Babies February 25 in the Community Room at Bank Midwest.
• Chats: Annexation of Rainbow Drive will be on the April ballot and will benefit both the residents and the city.
• Marie Scamman was crowned Valentine Queen and Tom Brown was crowned Valentine King at Pleasant View Nursing Home. A special candlelight dinner was held February 12 for 20 plus residents.
• The Rock Port Senior Center crowned Carl Moorman and Zella Davis as Valentine’s King and Queen.
