March 11, 1949
• Atchison County volunteers gave 55 pints of blood at the mobile donor unit at the Memorial Building in Rock Port last week. The blood will be used for patients at the veterans’ hospitals in Wadsworth, Kansas, and Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
• Redecorating is underway at the P.W. Holliway building by Bruce Pendleton of Tarkio to ready it for the occupancy of a United Auto store.
• When Melvin Rolf stepped out of the Memorial Building last week, he found his car missing. He had parked it alongside a similar car belonging to Bluford LaHue. It was discovered that LaHue had asked the Taylor Bros. to come get his car and wash it. They drove away in the Rolf vehicle and had it all cleaned up and shiny before the error was discovered.
• Now living in Tarkio after a residence of 17 years in Rock Port, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Campbell celebrated their golden wedding anniversary March 9. Maude (Martin) Campbell has lived in Atchison County her whole life and George has lived here 52 years.
March 7, 1974
• The second annual speech contest was held in Rock Port February 26 for grades four, five and six. A total of 24 students took part in the county-wide contest. Winners were: 4th grade – Holly Combs and Elaine Parks (Fairfax) and David Cerven (Westboro); 5th grade – Mark Powell and Roddy Barnes (Westboro) and Jane Nowland (Tarkio); and 6th grade – Robin Pierpoint (Tarkio) and Nathan Schaffner and Tony Schomburg (Rock Port).
• The 1974 Rock Port High School Basketball Homecoming King and Queen are Sherwood Duhon and Donna Haer.
• A petition for formation of an ambulance district for Atchison and Holt counties was filed at the courthouse in Rock Port Monday afternoon. The petition for Atchison County contained some 500 names while that of Holt County contained 808. The number of signers constituted for both county courts to hold a special election.
• A new record was set for the number of cases heard and the amount of fines assessed in Magistrate Court in one month since the court was established in 1945 thanks to the overweight citations coming in from the weigh station on I-29. Another new record was set in February for the amount paid into the county and state salary funds for costs assessed.
March 4, 1999
• Members of the Rock Port FFA Chapter have spent many hours constructing a hay wagon for Jerry Sutter. Jerry provided the materials, metal tubing, cattle gate, and running gear and the FFA members gave their time and labor to build it.
• Kate Griffin and Eric Bressler were named Rock Port High School third quarter good citizens by the National Honor Society.
• The line for Beanie Babies sold at Cabin Fever in Rock Port Friday, February 26, went from the counter, out the door, along the front, and around the corner of the building. The business donated their entire February shipment to the After Prom committee and the sales raised enough to pay for the promotion company that has been hired.
• Trent Corken has been chosen as the Optimist’s Teenager of the Month.
• Over 230 individuals enjoyed fish and chicken at the Atchison County Fair Board Fish Fry February 28. Approximately $1,400 was raised and will go to the Velma Houts Fair Building fund.
