March 18, 1949
• Tarkio Elementary first graders visited the local railroad depot station where they saw a freight train come in. An outcome of the visit was the construction of a train engine from orange crates and nail kegs. The second graders visited the Tarkio Post Office where Postmaster Alex Rankin showed them the way mail is handled. The students are enjoying a post office which they built in the classroom.
• Harry Luckhardt reports the sale to Jimmie Low of 14 top heifers from the Luckhardt Farms. These young cows are all bred to H.B. Mixer Gwen, the bull purchased last spring from Hardy Grissom of Abilene, Texas, for $5,000.
• Tarkio residents contributed $1,270.57 toward the 1949 Red Cross fund drive. The drive to raise $3,800 in Atchison County will continue through March.
• Young men in the Tarkio area interested in an officer’s career with the United States Air Force may learn firsthand about the aviation cadet-pilot training program from a special traveling procurement team scheduled to arrive here March 28.
March 21, 1974
• Mr. Aeschliman’s shop classes have been building duck decoys. The building of these decoys requires seven steps ranging from sawing, shaping, and hollowing of the willow boards to laminating the nearly complete project for waterproofing purposes.
• The elementary gym now has gymnastics equipment thanks to the Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio. The group donated $521 to the purchase of parallel bars, two foldable mats, and a multipurpose physical fitness apparatus.
• The Mule Barn Theatre announces the opening of a new production. John Ferola, artistic director of the Mule Barn, will stage “Story Theatre” by Paul Sills. The cast includes Marc Wooters, Madeline Guchigian, Dexter Armsted, Karen Bruhn, Debbie Jackson, Patty Davis, Bob Weber, Rick Callan, Tony Parker, and Joe Cunningham.
• Skip Shear, Tarkio College Basketball Coach, was named Coach of the Year by the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Coach Sheer led the Owls to an 18-7 season and the Heart of America Conference Championship where the Owls posted an 11 and 1 record. The team also gained a playoff berth in District 16 of the N.A.I.A.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Bud Low will be erecting a cross on the United Methodist Church grounds at 5th and Broad. With ivy planted around it, we hope to have a “living” cross in a few years. It is being installed to commemorate 2,000 years of Christianity.”
• The Tarkio High School Jazz Band placed second in Class A at the 18th annual Jazz Festival at NWMSU. Highlight of the day was was a performance by Clark Terry, the world renowned jazz educator who was a member of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show band. Terry has played alongside jazz legends such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
• For the first time in school history, the Tarkio Lady Indians high school basketball team is heading to the Missouri Class 1-A State Basketball Tournament. The girls will be entering the Show-Me Showdown with a 30-0 record.
