• Miss Constance Welling, B.S., Frigidaire District Home Economist, will demonstrate the time-saving, easy operating and most modern methods in preparing meals at the Memorial Building Thursday, March 24. The event is sponsored by Nickerson Appliance Co.
• The annual birthday party of the American Legion and Auxiliary held at the Memorial Building Monday evening attracted a record crowd of some 250 post members and their families.
• The James Mercantile Co., which has been operating the former Klump grocery store under the ownership of Thos. James, goes under new management this month. The new owner is Art Phelps of Red Oak, Iowa.
• The Muinch farm just west of Rock Port, which has been owned by the Muinch family or members of the relationship ever since 1871, has been sold to Rolla Cook. H.R. Alexander, county assessor, has bought the Cook farm.
• Funeral services were held for Caleb K. Tripp, aged 88 years, 11 months, and six days, on Friday afternoon. Mr. Tripp came to Atchison County as a young man and operated as a farmer for many years in the Walkup’s Grove community.

• Mrs. David Kirk of Rock Port brought in a fine 7 1/4 pound channel catfish she caught at the Nishnabotna River using a rod and reel and night crawlers as bait.
• Mardi Gras King and Queen candidates at Rock Port High School are: freshmen – Rick DeBuhr and Sandra Deckard; sophomores – Sean Easley and Judy Stanton; juniors – Mark Baker and Cathy Lewis; and seniors – Craig Heits and Kay Schumacher.
• Bert Shulimson, State Director of the Division of Welfare, Jefferson City, visited the Atchison County Welfare Office on Wednesday. This is the first time in the history of the Rock Port welfare office that the head of the State Department has visited here.
• According to an item in the Omaha paper, bidders have a bookie in Rock Port. “Don’t worry, betters. If the so-called outstanding citizens eliminate our good bookies, we can form car pools and drive down to Rock Port to place our bets.” A check with Atchison County Sheriff Paul Seymour indicated that local law officers know nothing about bookies operating in this area, but they are going to check the matter out thoroughly.

• Lowell Mason will perform at the Rock Port Church of Christ March 21. Mr. Mason has been called the world’s smallest gospel singer because of his unique height of 46 inches. His voice, however, has no comparison to his size. When he sings, his booming voice brings a thrill to everyone who listens.
• Rock Port third grade students visited Pleasant View March 12. They decorated patient rooms for St. Patrick’s Day and put on the play “The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf.”
• The Rock Port Community Garden Club sponsored a local Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl drawing contest. Winners were: first grade, Miranda Deatz; second grade, Leslie Alitz; third grade, Adam Alitz; fourth grade, Jared McMahon, and fifth grade, Cheyenne Francis.
• Michael J. Burg, a 1982 graduate of Rock Port High School, will be co-starring on the NBC sitcom “Lateline” Tuesday, March 23. He will also be appearing later this year on “The Sopranos.”
