March 25, 1949

•  The Tarkio College a cappella choir, comprised of 39 members and directed by Gavin L. Doughty, gave performances in Sidney, Iowa, North Bend, Nebraska, and Hamburg, Iowa. The group stopped in Omaha, Nebraska, to enjoy points of interest.

• Michael Hutchison, son of Rev. and Mrs. Russell Hutchison, was injured Thursday evening when he was struck by an automobile. Michael was knocked down by the bumper of the car and fell beneath it in such a way that none of the wheels hit him as the car passed over him. His only injuries were bruises and contusions.

• The Tri-State Speech and Music Festival drew 1,500 students to Tarkio last weekend. A total of 291 certificates of achievement were awarded to students from 42 towns.

March 28, 1974

• Sports Galore of ’74 is the them of this year’s Business and Professional Women’s League Style Show and Home Mart to be held Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2, at the Tarkio Community Building. Fashions from Clardy’s, Field’s Clothing, Golden Village, and the Tarkio High School Home Economics Department will be shown. Entertainment will be provided by Tawny Port, a musical group which includes Rod McGehee, Clark Evans, Dave Peterson, and manager Ron Watson; Paula Ohrt, guitarist and singer of folk songs; and Tim Bolton, vocalist.

• Joe Guastaferro has become a member of the Language and Literature Department of Tarkio College. Mr. Guastaferro is on temporary leave of absence as the general manager of the Hawaii Performing Arts Company of Honolulu.

• In order to acquaint the public with the facilities which have been secured as headquarters of Northwest Missouri Achievement Workshop (No-We-Mo) for the benefit of area handicapped individuals, the building at North Third Street will be open Sunday afternoon.

• Over 120 people met Tuesday for the Tarkio Community Betterment Awards Banquet. Carl and Betty Martin were honored with Citizens of the Year. Mrs. Marion Brooks, Farmers and Valley Bank, was named Employee of the Year. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thomson were honored as Farm Family of the Year.

March 25, 1999

• The Tarkio High School Lady Indians won the Missouri Class 1-A State Basketball Tournament and finished the season with a 32-0 record. Hundreds of the team’s fans lined Main Street in Tarkio on Sunday, March 21, to welcome the team home and to celebrate the victory.

• Harry Broermann was recently recognized for his 76 years of service to 4-H. He has been a 4-H member and volunteer since 1923. Broermann joined the then “Boys’ and Girls’ Club” and when he attended his first state 4-H competition nine years later, he demonstrated how to build a hog feeder from a barrel and steel wagon wheel. In 1936, he became club leader of Farmers City 4-H Club and for the next 22 years, he alternated the leadership role with his father.

• The management of FSC Bancshares, Inc., Cameron, Missouri, the parent bank holding company and sole owner of both Farmers and Valley Bank, Tarkio, and Farmers State Bank, Cameron, has announced its plan to consolidate the bank charters of the two institutions.
