March 25, 1949

• While removing some of the old plaster at the Henry Walter home in New National district recently, there were some relics found from the 1870s in the form of letters and handbills. Two letters from the Weed Sewing Machine Co. of Chicago were dated November 17 and 23, 1876. One of the handbills was from the Kansas City Times advertising a Grand New Year Donation of valuable presents on January 1, 1877.

• The Rock Port Board of Education has received the resignation of G.D. Morrison as superintendent effective July 1. His letter states that he will either continue studying toward his doctor’s degree or move to a larger school system.

• Paramount Theatre is showing: musical “Variety Time” and western “Indian Agent” Friday and Saturday; top western “Station West” with Dick Powell and Jane Greer Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday; and “Wings Over Honolulu” and “Corvette K-225” Wednesday and Thursday.

March 21, 1974

• Mrs. Claudia Boettner, Rock Port, recently purchased the home of Mrs. Tommye Gallup at 604 Stanton Drive. Mrs. Boettner will be moving in from her farm home north of Rock Port.

• The trampoline champion of Canada in 1971, Mr. King, was the guest speaker at an assembly held at the school in Rock Port March 12. Mr. King showed off some stunts.

• Cox’s Conglomerations: “I see where a fellow wants to be buried in his 1937 antique Dodge car. Wonder what kind of gas mileage he will get.” “Hardy – ‘What tense is ‘I am handsome!’ Ginny May – ‘Past.’”

• A new, free program specialty designed by the hospital staff for expectant mothers and fathers will be offered beginning in April by the Fairfax hospital. The program will involve a series of four meetings on prenatal education.

• Dr. Gary Powell has purchased the office building of the late Dr. D.C. Gallup at 604 S. Main. He has moved his business from the former location at 118 South Main.

March 18, 1999

• The Rock Port FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week last week. Ten students drove tractors down Main Street and parked them at the school on Thursday. Nineteen members attended the chili supper and barnwarming dance that evening.

• The Rock Port 4th grade basketball teams competed in the Rock Port Optimist Round Robin tournament Friday, March 12. The Rock Port girls placed first. The Rock Port 5th grade boys’ and girls’ basketball teams placed third, the 6th grade girls placed first, and 6th grade boys placed second in the Rock Port Booster Club Tournament Saturday, March 13.

• The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that Hwy. 136 in Atchison County will be closed Thursday for a culvert replacement.

• McDonald’s is highlighting “Students of the Week” for the week of March 15. Rock Port Elementary students featured include Kasilyn Wallace, Carla Davis, Royce Robertson, Kalem Saunders, Faith Hurst, Amanda Pinzino, Amber Hurst, Andrea Wallace, and Cory Ashford.
