• George C. Nicoll sold a 60-acre tract just north of his residence on the north edge of Tarkio to Marshall Marlatt of Rock Port at $270 per acre. Mr. Marlatt owns other pieces of land surrounding the newly purchased property.
• Tarkio was decked out with one of the cleanest business districts in northwest Missouri this week following a three-day street washing project by Street Commissioner Lynath Wells and a two-man crew. The Missouri Service Company provided water and a number of businesses donated money to provide the labor. Main Street from City Hall to the railroad tracks was washed down with a city hose.
• An outside assembly, “Along the Magic Trail,” was presented at Tarkio High School Thursday by Duke and Myrnella Montague, internationally recognized magicians known as the “wizards of ahs.”
• Dr. Simon J. Villenga has resigned as professor of chemistry and dean of men at Tarkio College effective September 1 to accept appointment as professor of analytical and physical chemistry at Monmouth College. Dr. Villenga has been at Tarkio College six years.

• Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. Martin of Tarkio will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary Saturday, April 13. The couple was married April 17, 1949, in Maryville. They have four sons and have a Mexican foreign exchange student this year.
• A weekend happening is in store for the United Methodist Church and guests of any denomination when a number of out-of-town “witnesses of Christ” come to share their experiences Friday through Sunday, April 5 through 7, in a Lay Witness Mission.

• The Tarkio Community Garden Club presented long-time member Velma Reumann the Tarkio Garden Club Community Award at the Community Awards Banquet March 22. Also recognized was Roger Livengood, who donates his accounting expertise to the club.
• The Atchison County 4-H Carnival King and Queen are Denton Melvin and Afton DeMott, both of Rock Port. The Farmer City 4-H Club won the booth competition at the carnival.
• The Tarkio Avalanche hosted the first 275 Conference All-Senior Basketball Classic March 29 at Tarkio High School. The girls’ white team and the boys’ red team were the winners.
• Tarkio High School Girls’ Basketball Coach Doug Kingery was named the Class 1A Girls’ Coach of the Year. Senior Jamie Johnson was named the Player of the Year by the St. Joseph News-Press and Johnson, Ashely Poptanycz, and Jamie Knierim all received numerous accolades for their accomplishments. Johnson scored 645 points this season alone and finished her career with 1,821 points.
• The Tarkio R-I Board of Education accepted the resignation of athletic director/football coach/social sciences teacher Tony Napierala.
• A new book, “Doctors Are People Too,” conversations with three doctors, features Dr. Fred Ashler of Hamburg, Iowa, father of Barb Rolf of Westboro, Missouri. The author is Duane Hutchinson, who shares the stories of Dr. Ashler’s, Dr. Guy Matson’s, and Dr. Alan Domina’s early life, family, education, civilian training, military experience, and specialized practices.
