• Showing at The Tarkio Theatre: Johnny Weismuller in “Tarzan & The Mermaids,” William Bishop and Edgar Buchanan in “Adventures of Silverado,” Brian Aherne in “The Locket,” David O. Selznick’s “Duel In The Sun,” and Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Esther Williams in “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.”
• A concert of unusual interest both from the human and musical standpoint was presented in the Tarkio College chapel Thursday, March 24, by Gerald and Wilfred Beal, 16-year-old twin brothers, who were accompanied by Virginia Gearhardt.
• A vacuum cleaner swindle scheme was halted in Atchison County. The four itinerant salesmen were all from Des Moines, Iowa. The salesmen offered to exchange vacuum cleaners, saying the company wished to call them in, for a nominal payment by the customers. After the salesmen’s departure, the customers would find their newly purchased machines unsatisfactory and that the salesmen had cashed their checks immediately upon leaving their homes.
• Captain William Kemerling of the Alaskan Air Command, Elemendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, whose home is Tarkio, was chosen to attend the Air Force’s Arctic Indoctrination School at Nome, Alaska. Captain Kemerling was a Tarkio High School and Tarkio College graduate and he also took a postgraduate course at Standford University.
• Graveside services will be held at Home Cemetery today for Pfc. Leonard Hicks, 31, who died April 13, 1945, in Germany as a result of wounds received in action in the infantry. Pfc. Hicks’ body had been interred in Holland prior to returning to Tarkio.
• Mrs. W.F. (Alice Hopkins) Baker, pioneer Atchison County resident, observed her 94th birthday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Flat River. Alice was born in Atchison County March 31, 1855, one of 10 children to Nelson O. and Kitty Hughes Hopkins. Her father was a “49-er,” one of the succesful adventurers to California who made the long trek overland and returned by sea. He served several sessions in the State Legislature.

• The Atchison County Flying Association has made the decision to forgo their 1974 Fly-In. The fuel shortage situation was the determining factor.
• Jeff Kinney, runningback for the Kansas City Chiefs, will be the featured speaker at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes rally on the Tarkio College campus April 24.
• Dr. William D. Hall will be on the Tarkio College campus April 27 to adjudicate the first annual Tarkio College Choral Festival. Dr. Hall has guest conducted around the U.S. as well as overseas.

• Don Slemp has announced his retirement after serving Hy-Vee for 45 years in the meat department. He began his career in Tarkio, but also served at Shenandoah, Corning, Des Moines, Johnston, and Urbandale, Iowa, stores.
• KRSS Radio of Tarkio has relocated its office to Main Street. The station now operates out of offices located in the Walnut Inn in downtown Tarkio. Satellites and a tower were erected on the roof of the Walnut Inn Wednesday, April 7.
• Bill and Mary Ann Hull moved their Quality Auto Repair business to the former Tarkio Tire location on 10th Street in Tarkio.
