• At the Fair Theatre: “Feudin’, Fussin’, and Fightin’” starring Marjorie Maine and Percy Kilbride; “Isn’t It Romantic?” starring Veronica Lake and Mona Freeman; and “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes” starring Edward Robinson and Gail Russell.
• Missouri may have an automobile license plate shortage this year despite the fact that plates for 900,000 passenger cars have been made. Supervisor of the motor vehicle registration John H. Allison says there are only 50,000 more passenger license plates left to sell and the deadline is May 4.
• Bion Schooler was injured in a tractor mishap Wednesday of last week. Mr. Schooler was pulling a harrow with a tractor and started up a bank when the tractor turned over backward. He jumped but the overturning machine caught his right leg in the fleshy portion just below the knee and a bolt in the lever caught him and penetrated his leg so he was pinned. He began calling for help and had about given up when Mrs. Vernon Gomel, who lived on the M.A. Williams place nearby, heard him and went to his rescue.
• The class of 1948 has presented a memorial cabinet to the Fairfax high school in honor of the graduates of the school who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II. The graduates appearing on the memorial are Gould Peterson, William Chatten, Max Miller, Tommie Frerichs, Charles Martin, Delbert Hecker, and Gordon Langston.
• The local vocational agriculture department has been informed that Richard White, 1949 senior, has been awarded the State Farmer FFA degree for his outstanding work in vocational agriculture and project work.

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax include: Tasty-Pak vanilla ice cream, $1.49 per gallon; Grade A fresh medium eggs, 59¢ per dozen; Hy-Klaas budget bread, 3 16 oz. loaves for 89¢; Hy-Klaas coney or hamburger buns, package of 8 for 39¢; and Hi-C fruit drinks, 3 for $1.
• The Fairfax High School music department will present its annual spring concert Thursday, May 9, under the direction of Brad Mathers.
• The Fairfax Community Betterment is continuing the beautification project started last year with removal of dangerous trees from the city park and replacing them with new nursery stock. Three trees have recently been removed. A committee went to Shenandoah last Monday and purchased 17 new trees, which were planted Monday and Tuesday evenings. The trees included Sunburst locust, white birch, flowering crab, crimson maple, and green ash.

• Oxy-Med in Fairfax sponsored a methamphetamine (meth) program at the Fairfax Fire Station Community Room April 22. Atchison County Deputy Dan Million spoke to locals about the meth problem in Atchison County.
• The 1999 Fairfax Junior-Senior Prom was held Saturday, April 24, at Fairfax High School. This year’s theme was “Stairway to Heaven.” Mary Chastain was crowned Prom Queen and Josh BeBout was crowned Prom King.
• Michael and Alicia Straub of Fairfax are pleased to announce the birth of their baby boy, Mason Michael Straub. Mason was born at Community Hospital Association on April 25, weighing six pounds and 15 ounces.
