May 13, 1949

• Rock Port has a new appliance store, which will be operated under the name of the Bertram Appliance Co. Byron Bertram has taken over the Frigidaire franchise and is opening a store in the first building north of the Ritz Cafe.

• Mina Matkin, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ray Matkin, is the valedictorian of the Rock Port High School Class of 1949. Alvin Lindeman, nephew of Miss Hermie Boesenberg, is salutatorian.

• The American Legion is sponsoring a free picture show at the Memorial Building Monday evening. There will be pictures of the 1948 World Series games between Cleveland and Boston with a color film, “America Sails the Seas.”

• Jack Savage is expanding his original idea of a trailer court at the north edge of Rock Port and will erect four modern cabins. They will be equipped with shower, bath, hot and cold water, and heat. The cabins will be Rock Port’s first tourist accommodations.

May 9, 1974

• Cox’s Conglomerations: “If you are really mad at somebody, we have a great crop of dandelion seeds you can have for nothing.”

• Janice Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Coburn Jackson of Rock Port, won the Stemmler and Fisher Copywriting Award at the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Journalism’s annual honor assembly.

• A1C Janet F. Scott, wife of A2C Tim Scott, was recently chosen as Airman of the Quarter for the months of October through December, 1973. She received the award from the 480th Reconnaissance Technical Group at Langley AFB, Virginia.

• Mrs. Jessie Boettner was honored by Sorosis with a tea May 1 at the home of Mrs. John Henry Cox. Mrs. Boettner has been a member of Sorosis for 55 years. Sorosis is the oldest organized club in Atchison County and is celebrating its 76th year.

• Saturday night, a tractor belonging to Charles Garst of Watson was turned loose by a vandal in a field. The tractor had a planter attached. The field had already been planted and corn was coming up. Sunday night, Leo Holmes’ tractor had some gas taken out of it and the wiring stripped. S.D. Lisle’s truck had the battery stolen. Sweed Johnson’s outboard motor had its shaft broken Sunday and there was some propane let out of a tank and a picket fence broken.   

May 6, 1999

• Mrs. Evans’ and Mrs. Sierks’ 6th grade classes took a walk on an aquatic field trip April 30 at Tarkio Prairie Conservation Area. Missouri Department of Conservation instructors took the students through four different stations – water testing, stream table, fishing, and a scavenger hunt.

• Sandy Lansdown has been named McDonald’s “Most Impressive Swing Manager.” Myra McMullen was chosen as McDonald’s “Employee of the Month.”

• Jim Amthor plans to hang up his barber shop shears this Saturday, May 8. Jim has been a part of the downtown business community for 53 years.

• Gary McGuire of Rock Port, a former TCI cable representative, joined the Rock Port Telephone and Cablevision staff May 3.
