• A material expression of neighborliness was experienced by Charley Chapman last Thursday morning when neighbors gathered at his farm to plant his corn. Mr. Chapman has been ill this spring and unable to work. Eight neighbors gathered at the Chapman home to plant with six tractors in operation. At noon, they were guests of Mr. Chapman at dinner at the Tumble Inn. Those assisting in the planting were Otto Sorensen, Bill Smith, Charley Freeman and son, Maynard, Eber Collins, Arthur Walkup, Harley Mather, and Tom Roberts.
• Athletes of Tarkio High School and Tarkio College were entertained by the Chamber of Commerce at a dinner Tuesday night. Fifty-four attended the event at the Walnut Inn.
• Mel Hansen, WOW farm service director, will be the guest speaker at a public meeting Monday evening at the Westboro City Park. He will speak about the WOW farmers’ tour in Europe.
• The two-year building program at the Rees-Copeland-Kelly Lumber Company neared completion this week with finishing of remodeling of the main office building. The building has been enlarged to 36×120 feet.

• Approximately $60 in cash was taken from the cash register at the Walnut Inn Monday night between the hours of 10:20 p.m. and 6 a.m. The loss was discovered when the restaurant opened for business. Entry was gained by forcing a screen fastener on a kitchen window on the east side of the building.
• The Tarkio Municipal Pool will open June 10. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Porter will be the managers and April Staashelm, Gale Seymour, and Darcie Lade will be the lifeguards.
• A gymnast program is to be held in Schechter Gymnasium on the Tarkio College campus May 30.
• Randall S. Jessee, Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will deliver the commencement address to the graduating class at Tarkio High School Friday, May 24.
• Jack D. Emry, Director of the Atchison County Welfare Office, announced he will retire effective May 31 after 15 years of service with the State of Missouri Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. His original appointment to the local welfare office was as a caseworker August 17, 1959.

• Tarkio Nutrition Center is the proud new owner of a computer complete with internet access.
• Jeff Champlin and Jamie Johnson were selected by the Tarkio High School student body to be named Mr. and Miss THS.
• Tarkio Elementary students and Tarkio Academy students visited a petting zoo held at the elementary May 12. Mr. Richard Fish of Dearborn, Missouri, is the owner of the small zoo of animals. The animals included a llama, donkey, pony, calf, emus, sheep, goat and kid, an angora goat, pot-bellied pig, four-horned sheep, goose, ducklings, and a rabbit.
• Thirty-three Tarkio High School seniors received their diplomas in a graduation ceremony held Sunday, May 16. The class song was “Nothing Else Matters.”
• Three Tarkio High School tracksters qualified for state. Ambera Wennihan qualified in the 800 meter run. Dustin VanGundy will be competing in the high jump and Nate Defenbaugh will be competing in the high jump and triple jump.
