• Rock Port was the gathering place on Sunday for members of the Missouri Valley Dahlia Association, the occasion being a garden party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Holliway.
• According to Mayor J.J. Wright, and other city officials, the proposed $35,000 bond issue to be voted on June 14 for water plant improvements will not prove a burden for Rock Port taxpayers.
• A total of 467 persons registered at the Hunter Cemetery Sunday and Monday. Flags were placed on the graves of soldiers who served in various wars.
• Captain H. Cotton Minchin, British consul at Kansas City, summed up a review of world affairs for Rock Port Rotarians, their wives and guests at a Rotaryann party held last week at The Ritz.
• A heavy electrical storm, accompanied by a prolonged downpour of rain, struck these parts Wednesday evening and continued without cessation far into the night. Damage by wind was extensive.
• Walter’s in Rock Port advertised the following red ticket specials: straw hats for men, women and children, 29¢; hammers, 9¢; 5-quart tea kettle, 98¢; gum and candy bars, 3 for 10¢; and Kwale-Kraft window shades, a durable paper shade, 78¢.

• The ambulance district proposition passed 1,655 to 510 and Atchison and Holt counties will have ambulance service. Voter approval Tuesday created the district and includes an automatic 15¢ tax levy.
• Mrs. James (Viola) Nixon, teacher for 22 years in Atchison County, 14 of those in the Rock Port R-2 school system, is retiring from the teaching profession at the end of the school year.
• The Rock Port R-2 school district has hired seven new teachers for the 1974-75 school year. They are: Peggy Meyers, third grade; Philip Cook, fourth grade; Nancy Weems, sixth grade; Katherine Parks, elementary music; Mark Dulgarian, social studies; Sydney Dulgarian, seventh and eighth grade language arts; and Theresa Wilson, Title I mathematics. Loraine Chastain, former custodian at the school, has been hired as bus manager.
• Rock Port’s two-mile relay team qualified at the district track meet in Maryville and competed at the state meet. Members of the team were Mick Wilczek, Willie Holmes, Dan Stanton, and Randy Alley.

• Steve Scamman was named the Rock Port Elementary Educator of the Year. He has been serving the Rock Port district for 28 years, and has been the elementary principal for the past 18 years. The Rock Port High School Educator of the Year was Kathy Moore. She has taught at Rock Port High School since August 1973.
• The Rock Port boys’ track team won the state track meet. This marks the third state title for the seniors and the sixth for Coach Del Stoltenberg. Trent Corken took the gold in the 800 meter run and the 1600 meter run.
• Mayor Paul Buck proclaimed May 19, 1999, as Mr. Steve Scamman Day. In honor of the proclamation, the elementary staff and students held a surprise assembly for Mr. Scamman and dressed like him – with most wearing overalls and cowboy hats.
• The Rock Port Market advertised Memorial Day Specials: whole fresh fryers, 89¢ per pound; ground chuck, $1.39 per pound; strawberries, 99¢ per pound; and watermelons, 19¢ per pound.
