• Highlights from the Tornado Belt: A tornado struck in this area Wednesday night. The tornado killed Margaret Alice Clark, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray L. Clark when it demolished her home she shared with her family southeast of Tarkio. Five other family members were hospitalized. A cancelled check from DuBois, Nebraska, dated September 12, 1901, was blown by the traveling storm to a hayfield east of Tarkio owned by Mr. Eber Collins. DuBois is 30 miles south and 80 miles west of Tarkio. Estimate is that 10 percent of Atchison County’s corn has been lost by floodwaters. Several homes, barns, and outbuildings were damaged or completely destroyed.
• A professional air show is scheduled for Sunday, June 19, at the Tarkio Airport. In conjunction with the air show, the Tarkio airport will be formally dedicated as Gould Peterson Field, Memorial Airport of Tarkio. The field is named in memory of Gould Peterson, who was lost during WWII on a flight from California to the Hawaiian islands.
• Final rites for Pfc. Vernon Monroe Dunlap, 29, who died from pneumonia while being held by the Germans as a prisoner of war, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Westboro. He was reported missing in action December 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge and two months later, word was received of his death that occurred January 27, 1945.
• Thousands of guests were removed from the Walnut Inn in Tarkio on Wednesday when Carl Williford and Robert Inman relocated a swarm of bees from the Inn to a hive.

• The Atchison County Extension Homemakers Council held their June council meeting on June 7 at the Extension Center in Rock Port. Four were recognized for being members for 50 years: Gladys Currie, Tarkio; Mrs. Jess Bowman, Fairfax; Mrs. Tom Burke, Rock Port; and Mrs. Glenn Stouffer, Fairfax.
• The United Telephone Company of Missouri is advertising The Memory Phone: “It works like any telephone. Until you switch on the ‘memory’ part. Then it answers calls automatically. In your own voice. And remembers every word your callers leave. Later it plays back everything that’s gone on since you’ve gone out.”
• Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Henning of Tarkio will observe their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, June 23, with an open house at the community room of Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio. The couple was married on June 22, 1924, in Clarinda, Iowa. They have lived in or near Tarkio all their lives.

• Chapter FF of P.E.O. in Tarkio hosted its annual Benefit Luncheon and Style Show June 5 at the home of Ralph and Mary Hackett in Tarkio.
• June Yards of the Month selected by the Tarkio Garden Club are: Roger and Kenna Levings, 612 Spruce; Larry and Nan Stepp, 1200 Elm; Betty Lindsay, 505 N. 8th; Pat Meek, 505 College; John and Debbie Driskell, 301 Chestnut; Nancy Barrett, 501 S. 8th; and the Group Home on Elm.
• The top boy and girl senior basketball players in northwest Missouri played in the 8th annual Lions Club All-Star Basketball Classic June 5 at Bearcat Arena on the NWMSU campus in Maryville. Tarkio’s Jamie Johnson played on the purple team, which won and was coached by Doug Kingery of Tarkio and Jeff Martin of Maryville. John Stockstill of Tarkio played on the gold team, which won the game.
