• Showing at the Rock Port Paramount Theatre: “Laramie” with Chas. Starrett; “Clay Pigeon” with Bill Williams; “Joan of Arc” with Ingrid Bergman; and “Criss Cross” with Burt Lancaster.
• Bluford LaHue brought to the Mail office the prettiest box of strawberries we have ever seen. When they were served at the table, they ranked with the finest strawberries ever tasted as well.
• Bill Corken led the Rock Port Rustlers to a 10-3 victory over Burlington Junction last Sunday, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 16 men.
• Funeral services were held at the Memorial Building Wednesday afternoon for Sgt. Bradford A. Rupe, who lost his life in action over Belgium on June 23, 1944. Sgt. Rupe, who was operating a service station in Rock Port at the time he was inducted, was born in this community on December 30, 1911, and died serving as a bomber nose gunner on a ship that was destroyed.

• The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and the Rock Port Police Department got the unusual task of babysitting a three ton Daily Bros. circus elephant June 2 after it injured the circus watchman who had arrived early with it and he was sent to the hospital. At one point, “We need help with this elephant. It’s trying to get away. What do we do?” was broadcast over the radio by an officer. The trainer, who was traveling from Stanberry, told them, “The elephant’s name is Susie. Approach her from the left ear and say ‘back Susie’ and give her a tub of water and a loaf of bread.” It worked.
• Mrs. Grace Vernon was honored on her 90th birthday Sunday, June 2, by 50 relatives, friends, and neighbors, who called on her at her home.
• Girls of Senior Scout troop 115 of Atchison County traveled to England and Scotland for three weeks of touring. Bake sales, babysitting, yardwork, lunch bars, and catering all helped finance the trip.
• The Bank of Atchison County has increased the size and black topped the parking lot to the rear of the bank. The lot was widened from 75×150 feet to 150×150 feet and in the process, Opp Street has been widened six feet for half a block.
• Delbert Stites has retired from the duties of bus manager for the Rock Port R-2 School District after serving since 1956. Stites has been driving school buses for 25 years and he began when the district only had three vehicles and the late Hall Warren was manager.
• The Rock Port Garden Club held its flower show June 1 at the Lutheran Church. Sweepstakes awards in both artistic design and horticulture went to Mrs. Jack Scamman.

• Elementary and high school basketball camps were held May 24 – 27, and were run by coaches Mr. Skillen, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Gaines.
• Community Hospital Extended/Intermediate Care patient Orville Wolf recently enjoyed a special family visit. He was visited by his infant great-grandson, Ellija Kade Plattner, Ellija’s mother, Anna Plattner, of Maryville, Ellija’s grandmother, Phyllis McKenney of Rock Port, and Ellija’s great-grandmother, Orville’s wife, Verna Wolf.
• Patsy Finell is the new owner of Cabin Fever in Rock Port. Jan Carpenter and Michelle Deatz are employees.
• The Citizens Bank & Trust held its 11th annual style show and salad luncheon May 26. Seventeen girls modeled numerous prom style dresses for the large audience.
