June 17, 1949

• Showing at The Fair Theatre: “To The Ends Of The Earth” with Dick Powell and Signe Hasso and “Luxury Liner” with George Brent and Jane Powell.

• The Harper Service Station in Craig, Missouri, on Hwy. 275 was knocked from its foundation and badly damaged about one o’clock Wednesday morning of last week when it was struck by a car that was out of control. The driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

• Miss Maxine Gubser suffered a concussion from a fall from a horse Sunday evening. She was taken to Mercy hospital in St. Joseph.

• Last week, Mrs. Fred Smith received a letter from Mrs. Edna McCahon of Shannon City, Iowa, in which was enclosed Mrs. Smith’s driver’s license. Mrs. McCahon said her husband found it in their cow pasture, blown there from the storm. Shannon City is some 113 miles from Fairfax.

• Mrs. Elmer Cottle and her four sons had a narrow escape when her car was run off the road by another vehicle, traveled over 300 feet, turned over three times, and traveled down a 25 foot embankment and was submerged upside down into White Cloud Creek. Mrs. Cottle was thrown from the vehicle, but she got up and pulled her two-year-old son from the car window, got a door open to release her eight-year-old son, saw her seven-year-old son had been able to escape by himself, and rescued her six-year-old son who was struggling in the water.

June 20, 1974

• Come to the Fairfax Fair this weekend! One of the big attractions will be the Union Mill Opry on the stage Friday night. A fine country music show will be presented. N.D. Green has been named honorary parade marshal of the fair and will receive a plaque. He has always been on hand to provide electrical service at fair time as well as to furnish and operate the public address system.

• Mrs. Jurine Straub made a fine piece of embroidery and quilting in the form of a quilt she donated to the Community Hospital Auxiliary to give away at the fair.

• The new Factory Store is now open and filled with walnut gift items at the north city limit of Fairfax. Owned and operated by Mrs. W.P. Kincannon and Jerry, the new venture is an attractive addition to the community.

• Having ink in your blood is more than just an old-time saying. Charlie Norton has been in the printing business at the same location on Main Street in Fairfax since 1975 as Norton Printing Company. Charlie provides customers in Atchison County with letterpress and offset printing and the company also carries a line of office supplies.

• Dixie Stoner, third grade teacher at Fairfax R-3, recently won a cash award from SuccessLink in Jefferson City, Missouri. Dixie submitted her plans for the annual “Christmas Around the World” project to Great Teaching Ideas and won for the month of May.

• Fairfax Postmaster Barney Farley presented Rose Adamson with a plaque in memory of John Egeland for his service to the United States Post Office.
