June 24, 1949

• Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth R. Weedin left Wednesday for Detroit, where Mr. Weedin will attend the fifth annual meeting of the Kansas City Life Insurance Company President’s Club at the Fort Shelby Hotel June 24. The Weedins will then go to Chateau Frontenac, Quebec, Canada, where they will be guests at the celebration of the completion of 25 years of service with the company by W. E. Bixby, president. They will be entertained with a cruise on the St. Lawrence River and also take a sightseeing trip to New York before returning to Fairfax.

• Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wennihan and family moved this week into a house which was built on the site of the Fred Smith home, which was totally destroyed in the June 1 tornado.

• Richard Lee Pearce finished his training at the Universal Trade School in Omaha and is now a full-fledged refrigeration and air conditioning engineer. He has accepted a position as a service man with the Frigidaire company in Auburn, Nebraska.

• Fairfax Boy Scouts presented a program at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning. Lester B. Miller of St. Joseph, Chief Scout Executive, spoke and presented the charter to the recently organized group.

June 27, 1974

• At the Fairfax Fair: Miss Tonya Shineman was named queen, Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Green were the parade grand marshals, Brian Martin was named Little Mr. Fairfax, and Kenna Gail Owens was named Little Miss Fairfax. Secretary of State James Kirkpatrick was the first of 328 people to have their blood pressure checked at the fair by a Community Hospital Association nurse.

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas Food Store in Fairfax: Kraft miniature marshmallows, three 10-ounce packages for $1; fresh Grade A fryers, 39¢ per pound; and Hy-Klas thin sliced sandwich bread, 24-ounce loaf for 39¢.

• Worlds of Fun in Kansas City will celebrate the four-day-long Independence Day weekend with special events called Super Stars and Stripes Nights. Super stars Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band, Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods and Lou Rawls will perform in the new Forum ampitheatre there.

• Fairfax Community Betterment has joined with AARP to offer an Over 50 Alive/Mature Driving course. AARP developed the eight-hour classsroom refresher course to help drivers 50 years of age and over improve their skills and prevent traffic crashes and violations. The classes will be offered at the Fairfax Fire Station community room.

• Golden Triangle Energy Cooperative, Inc. announced it has reached an agreement to buy 91 acres of land southeast of Craig, Missouri, on which to build an ethanol plant.

• The Fairfax R-3 Board of Education has approved the contract of Dorothy Benson as Superintendent of the Fairfax R-3 School District. She is a Tarkio High School and Tarkio College graduate.

• Ora Hayes will celebrate her 90th birthday on June 26 with a family picnic in the Fairfax City Park. The honoree was born on that date in Baxter County, Alaska, grew up in that area, and married Loyd Hayes on September 24, 1927. They had seven children.
