June 24, 1949

• A crowd of more than 200 persons patronized the Legion’s fish supper at the Memorial Building Tuesday evening.

• Mr. and Mrs. Mercer Burke are now residents of Rock Port, having moved into their new home on North Main Street from their suburban home a short distance east of town. Their son, James Burke, and wife have moved to the Burke home place.

• One of the Peterson caterpillars from Fairfax erected the big 60-foot poles which will carry the lighting equipment at the Rock Port City Park ball field. Men of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative assisted with the placing of the poles and affixing the big reflectors which will provide the illumination.

• The Rock Port Future Farmers of America chapter is operating a small demonstration plot of ground north of town on Hwy. 275. The plot was donated by Mrs. George E. Brown and is managed by a committee of chapter members, made up of Paul Deatz, Willard Herron, and Jimmy Sutter.

• The 1949 Rock Port city chess tournament started Sunday at the William Griffin residence. Contenders for the title are Jack Hunt, William Griffin, Raymond Smith, Louie Wolf, Joe McElfish, H.O. Roberson, and Chris Simon.

June 20, 1974

• Rock Port high school cheerleaders brought home 10 awards and the “spirit stick” for an excellent showing at a cheerleaders clinic at Northwest Missouri State University. Cheerleaders attending were Sherry Bogenreif, Diana Gebhards, Lori Bogenreif, Teresa Blasnitz, Jerri Miller, Julie Shineman, Cindy Randall, Maralee Sweeton, Jackie Leseberg, Tammy Garst, and Barb Harris.

• John Charles Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Cox, is the advertising sales manager this summer for the Atchison County Mail. Cox will return for his last semester for a degree in Agriculture Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia, this fall.

• Robert A. Kemerling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Myrle Kemerling, Tarkio, was commissioned a second lieutenant and awarded a bachelor of science degree upon graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy June 5.

• Showing at the Paramount Theatre: “Battle for the Planet of the Apes,” “Kansas City Bomber,” and “Paper Moon.”

• Atchison County students completing requirements for degrees at the University of Missouri-Columbia are: Barry P. Greenley and Rick A. Meyerkorth, Rock Port; James Leslie Brown and James Keith Salmond, Tarkio; and Alan Ray Wessler, Westboro.

• New arrivals include a son, Caden Charles, born June 3 to Chuck and Malisa Linthicum, and a son, Christopher Alan, born June 12 to Brandy Paris and Jeff Brion.

• The Rock Port varsity cheerleaders held their elementary cheer camp for 21 girls. The varsity cheerleaders who led the camp were Tawni Gebhards, Jessica Moran, Hillary Chamberlain, Lory Bresssler, Shae Esser, and Katy Hecker.

• Lucky Clover 4-H Club members toured the Vogel Popcorn Plant in Hamburg, Iowa. Members on the tour were Nicole Talbott, Jay Stanton, Andrea Talbott, Seth Showalter, Trey Garst, Cory Stanton, and Alex Garst. They were accompanied by Jill Garst and Dan and Janette Stanton.
