• Specials at Hy-Klas Food Store: include fresh farm fryers, 2 lb. average, 59¢ per pound; Armour’s cured ham, 9-10 lb. average, 57¢ per pound; Sweet Rasher bacon, 45¢ per pound; wooden spoons and forks, 10¢ per package; dill pickles, 27¢ per quart; and potato chips, 39¢.
• Tarkio was swept by flash floods after Monday night’s storm. A total of 4.62 inches of rain was recorded at the local station. The bridge went out north of town and the rivers overflowed into the eastern city limits along First Street. Rufus Ivy said that the water on Ranch 11, a mile and a half south of the wye on Hwy. 275, was the highest on Ranch 11 that he could recall seeing in 50 years.
• The low bid of the Joseph Pohl Construction Company of Nevada for oiling Tarkio streets has been accepted. Approximately 140 blocks will be oiled, which will take around three weeks. The city street department, under the direction of Lynath Wells, has begun preliminary work.
• Mary Jane Peck was crowned Tarkiesta Queen. She was crowned by retiring sovereign, Mrs. Jerry Ryan, the former Miss Sarah Lee Leap.

• Funeral services for Rubert L. Morgan were held July 1 at the Westboro Methodist Church. Rubert was born December 16, 1890, at Forbes, Missouri, and served in the U.S. Navy in WWI. He moved to Westboro in 1919 and was a carpenter and cabinet maker there until his retirement 12 years ago. He was also an accomplished stringed instrument musician and played for many dances in the area.
• A triangular swim meet on June 25 at the Tarkio Pool between Tarkio, Maryville, and Rock Port began the competitive season. Thirty-one new records were set for the Tarkio Pool. The Tarkio team won the event.
• Wednesday morning marked the 19th consecutive day without rain.
• William Mansfield, Assistant Professor of Music at Tarkio College, just returned from an intensive master class with Lili Kraus, world renowned concert pianist, at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Prof. Mansfield performed the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major while there. Mme. Kraus is the acknowledged expert on the interpretation of Mozart’s music for piano in the world today.
• Tarkio Mayor Roy McIntosh tied his own course record of 34 in a game in which he not only hit a hole in one on hole number six, but also birdied on numbers four and five.

• Dora Nelson of Westboro, Missouri, was honored with a 90th birthday party at the home of Millie and Charlie Hurst on Sunday, June 27.
• Ask Elsie Fae: “There’s been so much activity around Tarkio and Fairfax the past two weeks that I haven’t had time to diet.” “Starley Carr and his wife, Janet, were in town as Starley, who recently retired from the FBI, was to be inducted into the Tarkio College Athletic Hall of Fame. He earned this honor by his skill on the basketball court.”
• After months of renovations, the swimming pool at Heartland Recreation Center in Tarkio is now open.
• Fifty-two people attended the open house of the new post office in Westboro, Missouri, on June 23. The business had been at its old location since 1938. The new modular post office is run by postmaster Kay Smith.
