Looking at the trash and debris floating down the river, everything is on the outside and indicates the river is still rising. If you haven’t already done so, say a little prayer that the levees will hold.

Due to heavy rains in South Dakota and Iowa, flood warnings have been placed along the Missouri River, including Atchison County. The river is expected to crest at around 42.7 feet Friday, June 28, at Brownville, Nebraska.
Atchison County Levee District #1, Buchanan Levee District, and Northwest Atchison Levee District are currently recommending the removal of grain and equipment from the Missouri River bottom as soon as possible. Levees are new and untested and are considered vulnerable. The most critical time frame will start sometime on Wednesday and last through Monday. The Army Corps of Engineers and all the Atchison County levee districts are working closely to monitor the situation and check for vulnerabilities within the levee system.
Atchison County levees are currently being patrolled by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Unauthorized persons caught on the levee system will be prosecuted.
