• Showing at the Fair Theatre in Fairfax: “Hills of Home” starring Tom Drake, Janet Leigh, and Lassie.

• There’s no doubt about summer being here in full force as the mercury has soared up near or at the 100 mark every day for most of the week. Thursday was one of those 100 degree days and it was so warm that it even affected the pavement. On Main Street just north of the old White Eagle station, the pavement buckled and a section a foot wide halfway across the paved surface crumbled.

• “The 4 Black Aces” will provide the music for a dance at Skellytown two miles south of Fairfax on Highway 275 Sunday night, July 10.

• The lot on which the Fairfax Community Hospital is located has been much improved by grading and smoothing. The ambulance drive from Main Street to the rear of the hospital has been staked and soon will be surfaced with concrete.

• Max Stalcup sold the Fairfax Locker Plant last week to Carl Williford of Tarkio. Mr. Stalcup retains the locker plant building. Mr. Stalcup has owned and operated the locker plant for the past two years. He plans to return to teaching, which he followed until entering the service in the late war.

• Finishing touches are being put on the grounds and equipment for the 4-State Roundup. The opening show will take place Thursday, July 14. The world’s largest team of matched horses, weighing 2,500 and 2,600 pounds each, will be shown. These horses are owned by the Carlson Hybrid Corn Company of Audubon, Iowa.

July 4, 1974

• Mr. and Mrs. Joe Straub returned last Wednesday from a two-week visit with their son, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Straub and Christine in Ulster Park, New York. They made the trip by train and enjoyed extensive sight-seeing while in the East.

• Thirty-four entrants in the baking and handwork displays brought numerous items for judging at the Community Fair June 22. First place winners were: cake – Carol Ball, Sharon Pope, and Wilma Windhorst; bread – Rose Adamson, Mrs. Dale Seymour, and Sandy Burke; jelly – Rose Adamson; pies – Janis McCartney; and handwork – Mrs. Dale Seymour received the most ribbons with five and Mrs. Grace Beal received four.

• Mr. and Mrs. Gary Cooper have purchased the residence from J. Dean Bolton in northeast Fairfax.

• The attractive lawn of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Walker in south Fairfax was named July Yard of the Month by the Garden Club of Fairfax. Mrs. Leona Smith received honorable mention.

July 1, 1999

• Fairfax Yards of the Month for July are: Mike and Beri Hawkins, Jim and Janet Hunter, Bob and Marilyn Alldredge, and George and JoAn Whittington. The yards are judged and selected by the Xi Lambda Beta Sorority.

• The Kiwanis and Optimist clubs of Fairfax sponsored a 10 and Under Softball Tournament Saturday, June 26, at the Fairfax City Ball Park. The Fairfax team won the event. Team members include Shelby Zirfas, Brooke Heits, Whitney Sperry, Colleen O’Riley, Kaylyn Sly, Leslie Smith, Amber Lewis, Whitney Harrington, Nikki Graves, and Coaches Kim Heits and Mike Lewis.

• The Fairfax Music Boosters held a Fare “Wells” Ice Cream Social at the Fairfax City Park for music teacher Bill Wells, who has accepted a new position at Montgomery County. He has taught at Fairfax R-3 for eight years.
