July 8, 1949

• A singer from Tarkio, Al Sloey, was among those who pitched in when union workers walked off their jobs over the holidays in Reno, Nevada. When waitresses walked out at the smart $3,000,000 Mapes Hotel, Sloey and other members of the “Riders of the Purple Sage” cleared the coffee shop of dishes.

• Harrison W. Yount is the new chief aircraft communicator at the local U.S. Airways Communication Station. He previously worked at the station and lived in Tarkio in 1938 and 1939.

• Pvt. Floyd G. Traub of Tarkio has been traveling about the country to make appearances with the band of the famed 82nd Airborne Division. The band recently led the Flag Day Parade at Nashville, Tennessee, and played a concert afterward. Pvt. Traub is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

• Another Tarkio business has joined the march of progress in the downtown area. The Tumble Inn, owned and managed by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dragoo, is now cooled by an air-conditioning system installed last week.

• A swarm of bees made themselves comfortable in the home of Mrs. Wily Gray at 501 Chestnut Street in Tarkio, hanging out on the back of a dresser where they made six strips of honeycomb, including three full strips five inches wide from the top to bottom of the dresser. After failed attempts of smoking them out and moving them to another hive, she carried the dresser outside to add them to her other bee hives, without a single bee sting.

July 11, 1974

• Funeral services were held Saturday at Davis Funeral Home for Marjorie Miller Martin. She was a Tarkio College graduate and taught at Tarkio High School for 15 years before retiring three years ago.

• Dr. E. L. Niedermeyer was presented with a plaque of recognition in tribute to the time and talent provided to the sick and injured for the past 25 years. The accolade was presented to Dr. Niedermeyer at a banquet held at the Walnut Inn honoring him and the Fairfax Community Hospital board members.

• Ninety-seven contestants are signed up to compete in the 19th annual Missouri State Championship High School Rodeo in Tarkio.

• Tarkio College will hold its 12th annual Institute of Basic Theology from July 21-26. The featured speaker at Institute Hour is Dr. Samuel Calian. He will present lectures on “The Gospel According to the Wall Street Journal.” The Bible Hour will be run by Dr. Robert Coughenour and will teach this class on the wisdom literature of the Old Testament using the theme “A Thread of Wisdom.”

• Over 350 people attended the ribbon cutting and open house Thursday, July 1, at the new Avalanche building on Main Street in Tarkio. The staff enjoyed a toast at the end of the day to celebrate the successful event.

• Once again on the last Sunday of June, 32 relatives gathered at the Tarkio Legion Building for visiting and working on the history of the Ryan-Gaffney family. A basket dinner was held at noon. The previous night, 33 relatives gathered at the home of Vernon, Debbie, and Ashley Reed in Burlington Junction, Missouri, for a picnic and fireworks that night.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Since I was the official greeter at the Avalanche open house, Will gave me a corsage of four beautiful purple flowers to wear. I bragged about them to every visitor until someone told me that I was decked out in thistles!”
