• Last week’s Mail carried a short story about mysterious searchlight beams seen in the sky south of Rock Port. The matter has been solved by learning that the beams come from searchlights used on one of the boats doing Missouri River improvement work near Corning.
• Relatives have been advised that the body of Orval Wagner, foster son of Smith Wagner, has reached the United States and will arrive in Rock Port shortly for burial. The young man lost his life in Europe during the late war.
• Through the cooperation of the Community Club, which is assisting with the sponsorship of the movement, free swimming instructions are available two days a week at the Shenandoah swimming pool. Fifty persons made the trip to Shenandoah Tuesday.
• The heavy rains last week did immeasurable damage to bottom farms in the county.
• Frozen Food Center in Rock Port advertised red pie cherries (pitted and sugared) – $3.35 for a 15 pound can, and $6.30 for a 30 pound can.

• The City of Rock Port will receive a grant from the federal government of $9,750 for the construction of a sludge waste lagoon at the city water plant.
• Nebraska Public Power District’s Cooper Nuclear Station at Brownville, Nebraska, officially went commercial at 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 1. At that time the plant was generating at approximately 390,000 kilowatts of reliable power which was 50 percent of the plant’s net capacity.
• Sue Knierim, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Knierim, Rock Port, was first runner-up in the Nishna Valley Rodeo Queen contest held June 14 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Maralee Sweeton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sweeton, and Paula Mullins, daughter of Mrs. Ned Greenley, were the other contestants from Atchison County out of the 11 who competed.
• “Billy Jack,” one of the most popular pictures of our time, is showing at the Paramount Theatre.
• The deadline for filing as a director in the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District election is July 17, according to Don Husing, county clerk. Candidates who have filed are: John Phelps, Rock Port, District 2; Irvin Vette, Westboro, District 1; Bill Livengood, Craig, District 5; and Clem Peters, Fairfax, District 4.

• A luncheon was held June 25 at the Rock Port Country Club to honor 30 recipients of the Gibbs Trust Scholarship.
• Proctor & Sons Construction has started the project of replacing seats and walkways at Blue Jay Stadium.
• Shannon Shineman, daughter of Steve and Jo Lynn Shineman, attended the 58th session of Missouri Girls State. Shannon was chosen by her fellow delegates to the office of County Assessor of Bacon County.
• The Rock Port Community Garden Club and the Tarkio Community Garden Club held their second joint standard flower show June 25 at the University Extension building in Rock Port. There were 140 entries.
• Dr. R. Aron and Joanna Burke announce the birth of their daughter, Journi Elizabeth, born June 14 at the Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
