July 22, 1949
• Showing at the Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Li’l Abner,” “Puddin’ Head,” “Two Guys from Texas,” “Village Barn Dance,” and “Hollywood Barn Dance.”
• Wilbur Schooler’s vehicle caught fire while atop Pike’s Peak in Colorado. There was no way to combat the fire and the car was blown to pieces over the mountainside. Only the engine was left. One of Schooler’s suitcases was lost and one badly burned and the contents ruined.
• Corporal Cohen’s Hiway Super Market was robbed Saturday night and the loss is estimated at over $3,000 in cash, checks, and jewelry.
• The town of Westboro now has a fire truck. While the town has no city water supply, the truck carries a 350-gallon tank which furnishes an emergency supply. The truck is equipped with 900 feet of hose of different sizes.
• A 17-year-old girl is being held in the Atchison County Jail on a felonious assault charge. The girl, without provocation, struck 76-year-old Mrs. Maud Adams of Watson, Missouri, on the head with a flatiron.
July 18, 1974
• Bradley Engine Service has moved to Hippo Melvin Oil Co. to give you more service under one roof.
• Mrs. James (Viola) Nixon, teacher for 22 years in Atchison County, 14 of those in Rock Port, has been named one of the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America for 1974. Mrs. Nixon retired at the end of the 1973-74 school year.
• Harry Bennett of Rock Port was uninjured when the 1959 Ford pickup he was driving struck a cow July 15 at 10:30 p.m. three miles northwest of Fairfax on Route J. The cow, owned by James Steel of Fairfax, was not injured and the damage to the pickup was slight.
• Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Million will be honored for their 50th wedding anniversary July 28 at their home in Rock Port. Million is a retired implement dealer and farmer and Mrs. Million is a nationally accredited flower show judge.
• Mrs. Paul Bressler has recently opened a new beauty shop, Patti’s Palace, at 211 South Main, the former location of the D & N Western Store.
• The Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Regional Office in Rock Port opened July 16 with Mrs. Charles (Maxine) Eddy as the new registrar. The license bureau has been relocated to the original office in the Memorial Building.
July 15, 1999
• The Rock Port and Fairfax Junior High cheerleaders attended a cheer camp at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville June 28-30. Both teams won spirit awards.
• Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative was one of four that earned a Marketing 2000 Benchmark Award from Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. AECI’s Benchmark Award recognizes cooperatives that have set a standard of excellence by achieving the highest ratio of ground-source heat pump unit installations in a single year to the number of electric meters observed, in respective size categories.
• The Prairie Art Guild of Atchison, Kansas, has stopped at Star Hill Prairie Art Center and will be on display there for the months of July and August. The work includes oils, pastels, acrylics, water colors, color pencil, and stained glass.
• New signs identifying the City of Rock Port and the Rock Port Municipal Utilities offices were hung this past week.
