July 29, 1949

• Word has been received of the death of Lyman Henry Sommer, 57, who some 25 years ago was one of the publishers of the Tarkio Avalanche. Sommer was killed when he fell from a load of hay at Santa Monica, California, and landed on a pitchfork. He had been engaged in the feed and grain business in that city in recent years. Sommer had published several newspapers and had worked on the Kansas City Star and Wichita Eagle.

• The Omaha Rockets will meet the Tarks at the Community Park in baseball action Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. The Omaha team is coached by Mack Massingale with stars of James Stephens as third baseman and Joe Webb as catcher. [Satchel Paige played on this Omaha team in 1947.]

• Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for Lester Charles Johnson, 59. The son of William Lafe Johnson and Christina Johnson, he was born August 2, 1889, on a farm in the York community. His parents were early settlers of Atchison County. A WWI veteran, Lester engaged in farming in the Tarkio community and in later years followed a line of carpentry wherever there was demand for his services.

• James W. “Bill” Painter will become manager of the Standard Service Station at Second and Main streets. Mr. Painter has purchased the stock and equipment from Don Whited and has leased the station from the Standard Oil Co.

August 1, 1974

• Northview Manor Convalescent Center was sold to the Bethesda Foundation for $649,073.66. A cash payment of $49,073.66 has already been received and the remainder of $600,000 will be paid over a period of 240 months with interest at a rate of 8 1/2%. The facility was opened in 1970. The original facility had a 60 bed capacity, but with the newly opened addition, there is a possible 100 with 90 at the present time.

• Joey Corbin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Corbin, of 611 Maple Street, grew a 21 inch long cucumber in their garden which weighed a hefty three pounds, despite the lack of rain this summer.

• The annual Nuckolls reunion was held Sunday, July 28, at the Tarkio Community Building. There were 45 people in attendance.

• Jerry Brown, assistant basketball and football coach at Maryville the past two years, will be head basketball and assistant football and track coach at Tarkio High School this school year. He will also teach psychology and world history.

• Arlene Wheeler of Tarkio will celebrate her 90th birthday on Friday, August 6. Arlene is an honorary aunt to the Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Tarkio.

• As of press time, there were 25 teams planning to come to Tarkio to compete in the 13th annual 11 & Under C.A.B.A. World Series. Games get underway Friday, July 30, however the festivities will begin Thursday, July 29, with a tailgate picnic.

• Sasha Hogue of Westboro received Best of Show at the Atchison County Fair in Rock Port for her stained glass box.

• The City of Tarkio has started taking bids to purchase central air conditioning units for the Tarkio Community Building. According to Mayor Vilas Jones, the bids are expected to come in around $12,000. The cost of renting the building will be increased to offset the cost of the additional electricity used.
