July 29, 1949

• The state highway department announced that the next order of construction of highways in Atchison County is approximately 6.9 miles on Route J, running from what is known as “the cut.”

• The Rupe’s Grove School was sold at auction to J.L. Luttrell for $380. He may use the material to erect a dwelling in Rock Port. The furnace was sold for $25, with the total for outbuildings, books, coal, etc., amounting to $560.

• Rock Port’s beautiful 45-acre memorial park will be the location of the 1949 Atchison County Fair August 24-26. Plan to make entries, meet and visit with your friends and enjoy the exhibits, programs, and big carnival which will be on hand.

• Mrs. Olin Slemp was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver when she stepped onto the highway at the Skellytown resort south of Fairfax. Frances Lou (Whited) Slemp was only 23. The Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol are investigating.

• Miss Alma Ohrt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ohrt of High Creek neighborhood, has completed three years of nurse’s training in Omaha. She plans to further her career in nursing by taking a position in a Colorado Springs, Colorado, hospital.

• Showing at The Paramount Theatre in Rock Port: “Bells of Capistrano,” “Dark Past,” “Champion,” and “The Three Musketeers.”

July 25, 1974

• Marlene and Emily Walter and Maralee Sweeton qualified for nationals with their performance at the Missouri State High School Rodeo, held July 12-14 in Tarkio. Emily placed third in break-a-way roping, Marlene placed third in pole bending, and Maralee placed third in barrels. The National High School Rodeo Finals are in Tomah, Wisconsin, August 5-11.

• Yugoslavia was the center of attention for publisher and Mrs. John Henry Cox along with 36 other publishers and their wives for 17 days as members of the International Press Study Mission to Yugoslavia in June.

• “American Graffiti” is showing at The Paramount Theatre in Rock Port.

• A record of 108 degrees Fahrenheit was set July 21 in Rock Port. Nothing has equaled this in the last 30 or 40 years. The blistering Sunday was preceded by four days of over 100 degrees: July 17 – 101, July 18 – 102, July 19 – 103, and July 20 – 104.

• Nurse’s aide pins were presented to 14 area women July 19 for completion of the new aide program conducted at Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port.

• Officers and advisor of the Rock Port Chapter of the Future Farmers of America attended an FFA leadership training workship on July 18 at Northwest. There were 238 FFA officers and advisors from 38 schools of the Northwest Missouri District in attendance.

July 22, 1999

• The Rock Port Christian and First Lutheran Vacation Bible School was held July 12-16. Palestine 30 A.D. was attended by 94 children and boasted a staff of 60 volunteers.

• The annual Citizens Bank & Trust Golf Tournament was held July 13 at the Rock Port Golf and Country Club. There were 103 golfers who took part in the event which raised $942 total. The funds were donated to the Rotary for their resurfacing the track project.

• Phil Graves and Clay Vogler put up letters spelling out “Velma Houts Fair Building” on the facility for the upcoming Atchison County Fair.
