Summer at the Rock Port Senior Center has been exciting. We received funding for the replacement floors and are waiting to schedule that project. It will likely be a late summer project with a closure. We will notify everyone if we are closed on a regular day and make sure our home delivered clients are supplied with meals for any days we are closed.
In the first week of June, all of our staff were trained in AED and CPR. We want our community to know that we are prepared in the event of an emergency with your loved ones while they are here with us. Andrea Cook and the Atchison County Health Department provided that training. As administrator, I attended a meeting for CHIP (Community Health Improvement Plan). The work that many entities in Atchison County are putting in to better the health of the community is amazing. This project focuses not only on physical health, but mental and emotional, family, and social health as well. Atchison County’s health being a priority made me very proud.
The Senior Tax Board joined the center for lunch and held a meeting here June 11. The Senior Tax Board helps fund the center so that we may continue to serve our community. We appreciate the consideration of the board. June’s center board meeting welcomed four new members and appointed new officers for the fiscal year. They are: Chuck Sierks, president; Pam Henderson, vice-president; Shirley Cook, treasurer; and Dana Thompson, secretary. New members include Brenda Hughes, Steve Proctor, Brenda Scamman, and Ken Miller. We are grateful for the service they put in to help this ship run smoothly.
The center held a fundraiser during the 4th of July festivities in the park. While not a lot of people attended, we did manage to raise over $500. We appreciate all who came in and volunteered, donated, and joined us for the day. Next year will bring new ideas. The center is going to be set up at the Fairfax Fair for a fundraiser August 16 and 17. We will be selling cookie ice cream sandwiches and bottled water. Proceeds go back into the center to keep feeding the senior citizens in the community. We are looking for volunteers to work the booth in one- or two-hour shifts. There is a sign-up sheet in the center or you may contact Maria at the center to sign up.
A reminder, all first-time diners need to register. See Maria or ask one of the kitchen staff for a form. Many people donate and dine here on a regular basis and it is our pleasure to serve you! We are always looking for volunteers to help deliver to our homebound clients. An added bonus is that volunteer hours are reimbursed by the state to the center, which helps feed the senior citizens in Rock Port. So not only are you taking a hot meal to someone who may not otherwise get one that day, you are also helping fund that meal. If you are interested in volunteering reach out to Maria at the center (660-744-5812) for more information. Each volunteer receives one free meal each time they volunteer. Just let the kitchen know if you will be taking a meal.
