• Billy Rupe Bartholomew suffered a fractured ankle Thursday evening of last week while playing in a ball game between Rock Port and Burlington Junction on the local field. He attempted a steal of second base and sustained the injury while sliding into the base.
• Emma Jane (Ruble) Leisman, 67, of Watson passed away Tuesday. Emma was born July 19, 1882, near Old Sonora west of Watson on the Missouri River. Her entire life was spent in the community where she was born.
• The Legion Auxiliary elected Mrs. Chet Caton secretary to succeed Mrs. John Gregg, who resigned because she expects to move from the community.
• Bleacher seats are being erected at the new athletic field at the Rock Port school premises. The new field lies to the west of the old field and will be utilized next fall for football and other events.
August 1, 1974
• Sale of Northwest Nodaway Telephone Company of Burlington Junction to IAMO Telephone Company of Coin, Iowa, has been approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission. The companies have agreed on a price of $275,000.
• Two speeders fined through the Atchison County Court were caught by airplane patrol checks. An Iowa man was charged with speeding 77 mph in a 55 and a Nebraska man was charged with speeding 84 mph on I-29.
• Mr. and Mrs. Tim Whelan entertained 32 guests Friday night when the young couple was surprised by a charivari. The entertainment of the evening was a ride in the wheelbarrow and an evening swim.
• D & N Western Store, owned and operated by Don Tharp, Rock Port, is having its grand opening Saturday, August 3, at the new location on Highway 136 east of Rock Port. Tharp says he will trade your old boots in on a purchase of a new pair and prizes to be given away include a free pony, moccasins, shirts, jeans, and tack.
• A family shooting fireworks was the cause of a grass fire at the Danny Cooper farm August 27 at 9:45 p.m. Fire was on the hillside but was put out with fire beaters as the truck couldn’t reach the fire.
• A crowd of 1,200 people turned out for the 36th annual membership meeting of the Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative at Rock Port’s beautiful city park. Evening entertainment was provided by the New Sundowners, local country and western band.

• Red Cross swimming lessons are currently being held at the Rock Port Pool. A total of 110 kids are enrolled with 20 adults volunteering their time to teach. The Rock Port Pool is one of the few remaining pools that offer Red Cross swimming lessons free of charge.
• Members of the Rock Port High School Drama Club held a car wash to raise funds for a trip to London, England. The kids raised $137 at their third car wash, held Saturday, July 24, in the parking lot of Bank Midwest.
• An open house was held at the Atchison County Development Corporation’s new office, 518 Main Street in Rock Port, on Saturday, July 24.
