August 12, 1949

• The Red Cross mobile blood unit collected 43 pints of blood from Atchison County donors at a blood drive at the Methodist Church in Fairfax last Thursday. The blood collected will be used at the veterans administration hospitals at Excelsior Springs and Wadsworth.

• Mrs. F. B. Strickler has purchased from William E. Booth the latter’s residence and 12 1/2 acres of land at the northeast corner of Fairfax. Mr. and Mrs. George Bilby and sons will move to the place to make their home.

• Mrs. Dean Maness suffered a leg injury Monday afternoon. She was standing beside the highway near the Irvine Service Station when a highway maintainer truck came by. A blade broke off the motor fan as the truck passed her and the piece struck her on the leg.

• Fairfax will get its second aerial spraying of D.D.T. spray Friday morning of this week if weather conditions cooperate. Alleys and ditches were sprayed from the ground Monday morning.

August 15, 1974

• Specials at Hunter’s Hy-Klas include: Dad’s root beer, 64-oz. bottle for 69¢; Kraft grape jelly, 18-oz. jar for 59¢; Northern paper towels, twin pak for 49¢; fresh beef liver, 69¢ per pound; Hy-Klas coney or hamburger buns, pkg. of 8 for 39¢; and Ore Ida frozen onion rings, 12-oz. pkg. for 69¢.

• “The Gospel According to Most People” – a religious western – will be shown in the Fairfax City Park Sunday, August 18. The event is sponsored by the Fairfax Ministerial Alliance.

• Work was completed earlier this week on 12 blocks of city street resurfacing. Increased costs kept the project to a minimum. The cost of street oil at 42¢ per gallon is double the cost from a year ago.

• Marking its 100th anniversary, the Fairfax Masonic Lodge No. 483 AF & AM will hold an open house Saturday, August 24. A banquet will be served at the high school gym with Grand Master of the State of Missouri as the keynote speaker. The lodge was first chartered in Milton as Irish Grove Lodge. The lodge met in Milton from 1874 to October 7, 1886, when it moved to Fairfax.

• United Telephone Company is installing equipment which will permit John Vogler to participate in class discussion from his home, rather than in the 4th grade classroom at Fairfax R-3. John was born with a heart abnormality that makes it difficult for him to attend school regularly.

• The 20th Century in Review is this year’s theme for the Fairfax Fair, which will take place this weekend. Some of the fun-filled fair events include the Baby Show, Little Mr. and Miss Fairfax/Junior and Miss Fairfax Contests, Car Show, Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Tournament, Sophomore Work Auction, Old Time Tractor Reunion, Parade, Kiss the Pig Contest, Mic-O-Say Dancers, and Sunday BBQ, as well as entertainment on the stage and booths in the park.

• Lorene (Penny) Maris will celebrate her 97th birthday on August 15. She was born on that day in 1902 and has lived in the Fairfax area since 1928. Lorene has seen many things change over the years, like riding to town in a horse and buggy to the invention of automobiles.

• Charles and Patricia (McGinnis) Hawkins of Fairfax will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary August 28. They were married on that day in 1949 at the Chamberlain Chapel in Rock Port. A reception is being held in their honor.
