August 12, 1949
• Jack Scamman, a recent graduate in veterinary medicine, is establishing an office in the Bentley building on North Main Street.
• Funeral services were held at the Bertram Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon for Orval O. Wagner, who lost his life in Central Germany on April 13, 1945. At the time of his death in the service to his country, he was 29 years, three months, and 29 days.
• The Rex Shandy business establishment on No. 275 was broken into by way of the rear door Thursday night of last week and the place was ransacked. Every place that might have hidden valuables was searched by the robbers, but they only got away with a small amount of change and a carton of cigarettes.
August 9, 1974
• President Richard Nixon, acknowledging Watergate had destroyed him politically, announced Thursday that he would “put the interest of America first” and resign Friday in favor of Gerald R. Ford. Nixon’s historic announcement came exactly six years to the day – and almost the same hour – that he stood before cheering delegations to the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach in 1968 and triumphantly accepted his party’s nomination for his first term.
• Mrs. Lowell Dorothy Pierce has been named one of the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America for 1974. Mrs. Pierce will shortly begin her 25th year of teaching, 21 of those were in Rock Port R-3 school system and three in an Atchison County rural school.
• Mr. and Mrs. Martin Underwood will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary August 17. Martin and Letha Bowden Underwood have been residents of the general Rock Port area all of their lives.
• Dennis Jones, Rock Port, has accepted a position to be a driver’s education teacher for the department of education government of Guam at Agana. Mr. and Mrs. Jones will be in Guam for two years.
• Weather might not be right for corn and soybeans, but the lack of moisture didn’t seem to affect the pumpkin crop at the Russell Herron farm. Todd and Mike posed with a 75 pounder that measured 18 inches high and 62 inches around and only stopped growing because it broke off the vine.
August 5, 1999
• The Rock Port Market featured employee Dixie Wirth in their weekly ad. Dixie has worked for the store for 1 and 1/2 years and is currently the groceries buyer and is in charge of truck deliveries.
• Tyler Holmes of Rock Port attended the KU Basketball camp on the campus of Kansas State University in Lawrence, Kansas, July 25-29. He won the eliminator championship and was awarded the Best Hustler Award.
• Sasha Hogue, Karla Murphy, Emily Seymour, and Kaitlin Seymour competed in the Atchison County Fair Horse Show.
• Elmer Davis was honored for 30 years of service with Rock Port Telephone Company. Elmer began his career in November of 1968 as a central office technician and now serves as the company plant manager.
