• Showing at The Tarkio theatre: “Desert Vigilante” with Michael O’Halloran and Charles Starrett; “Blue Skies” with Bing Crosby; “Colorado Territory” with Joel McCrea and Alexis Smith; and “The Bribe” with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner.
• Tommy Ward of Craig won the three-block Main Street jalopy race in 36 seconds. This was the opening feature of the Tarkiesta event. Seven cars were entered. James Powell of Tarkio came in second place.
• Work is scheduled to begin next week on a new grain elevator in Tarkio for Hart-Bartlett-Sturtevant Grain Company. The new elevator, whose capacity will be approximately 35,000 bushels, will be erected adjacent to the C. B. & Q. Railroad track and directly south of the Wennihan Service Station on Highway 4.

• Western Auto is advertising: .22 long rifle cartridges – 85¢; boys’ or girls’ Buzz Bike – $55.88; 32 gallon plastic trash cans – $3.33; big picture 25” color console TV – $499.88; 15 cu. ft. refrigerator freezer – $269.88; Davis LPSII set of 4 tires – $99; and men’s or women’s racer 10-speed – $107.95.
• The Tarkio Water Company, a recently formed not-for-profit corporation, announced that agreement has been made with the St. Joseph Light and Power Company to purchase the water distribution system. The company has made the purchase in order to maintain local control of rates and operations of the water system. Under the corporation’s form of ownership, the city can control the water system and its rates without legally obligating the city for any of the debt or operating liabilities.
• Tarkio Girl Scout Cadette Troop 208, which was formed last spring, has enjoyed a busy summer. The 22 girls first held a project of a “Come-to-You” car wash where they traveled to pre-arranged customers to wash and shine cars. In early June, they met at the depot and biked and hiked to Centerview Lake to fish. In July, they watched the dress rehearsal of “Hello Dolly” at the Mule Barn Theatre, held an overnight campout at Polson’s Bluff, and enjoyed a roller skating party at Falls City, Nebraska.
• Linda’s Beauty Shop at 402 Main Street in Tarkio is advertising a fond farewell to Zella Pinkerton and a joyous welcome to Cheryl Elliott.

• Members of the Tarkio R-I Chapters of Future Homemakers of America (FHA) have announced that the group has changed its name to Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). At FHA’s national business meeting on July 6, members from across the country voted to change the 54-year-old traditional name to one they hope will resonate with today’s and tomorrow’s teens.
• This week marks the official launch of a new internet website encompassing the 19-county region of northwest Missouri and Tarkio. The new website, www.NorthwestMissouri.com, is a major expansion of the Tarkio Avalanche’s website which has been in development stages during the past year.
• Patty Nelson’s new shop Unicorns and Dragons on Main Street in Tarkio may have you feeling as though you traveled to the past in a time machine. Patty specializes in making period clothing such as dresses, kilts, and century-old attire. She has made clothing for Renaissance fairs, Civil War reenactments, costume parties, and more. Patty also does alterations and zipper repair for the average outfit or wedding attire and even makes Halloween costumes.
• Tarkio’s 4th annual Friendship Day is scheduled for Friday, August 27.
