August 19, 1949

• Witnessed by a crowd estimated at between 1,500 and 2,000 persons, the Rock Port Cardinals downed the Fairfax team 8-1 on the local field Thursday evening of last week. Rain stopped the game at the end of the 7th inning.

• Farmers in Atchison County had put 2,612,444 bushels of corn under the government price-support program as of June 30 of this year.

• Seldom has Atchison County seen as large a peach crop as is being harvested this summer. Prices, which started as high as $3 a bushel, have gone as low as 50 cents if you pick them yourself.

• Old-time baseball players 40 years and older (and not playing this season on a league team) will get together on the Rock Port diamond Monday, August 22, with Rock Port vs. Fairfax. Rock Port’s team, the Rickety Rockers will have some 20 or 30 assorted players.

• New traffic signs have been erected around town in recent days. Some prohibit parking on certain streets, a stop sign has been moved to a different part of an intersection, and a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit sign has been put on Main Street.

August 16, 1974

• George Henry, outstanding cross country and distance runner for Tarkio College, placed 4th in the Omaha First Annual A.A.U. Marathon run on August 4 in Omaha. He ran the 26.6 mile course in a time of 2 hours, 36 minutes, and 40 seconds.

• Rep. Hardin Cox and his motorized bathtub won a blue ribbon at the Winston Lions Festival Parade July 27. The old-fashioned tub is mounted on a chassis with go-cart wheels and a small engine for power.

• Dale and Ann Adams, their two horses pulling a covered wagon, and their dog recently made their way through Atchison County. The couple started on their journey June 2 from Columbus, Ohio, and hope to arrive in Huntington Beach, California, by mid-September. The Adamses have been sticking to the byways and remarked that the Tarkio to Rock Port stretch of 136 was the worst traffic they have encountered so far.

August 12, 1999

• The sixth annual Moore family golf day was held Saturday, July 31, at Rock Port, hosted by Kevin and Janet Beasing of Overland Park, Kansas. Attendees enjoyed golfing and/or lunch at the club house. The coveted traveling trophy was won by the team of Jace Runkles, Oscar Moore, and Helen Beasing.

• McDonald’s announced its Employee of the Month Award was presented to Tammy Silkett. Tammy has worked at the local restaurant for four months. She was chosen for the dedication she shows to her job and her ability to direct crew members and keep things running smoothly.

• Aaron Griffin, Travis Herron, and Rebel Herron were pictured showing off a 20 pound flathead catfish that Travis caught at a local farm pond.

• Byron Dewey’s healthy looking tomato plants are close to seven feet tall. Byron may have cut back on the quantity of his crop, but not the quality.

• Over 250 people attended the open house at Rock Port City Hall to share in the celebration of the remodeling and refurbishment of the facility.
