• Phillip Hamilton got his first taste of salt fishing while vacationing in San Francisco, California, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Hamilton. The San Francisco News metropolitan newspaper even ran a picture of Phillip hauling up a shiner from Fisherman’s Wharf.

• The Rev. Fred J. Fahrion will preach his first sermon as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at worship service on Sunday. The Rev. Mr. Fahrion and his family arrived in Tarkio Tuesday. They are from Hickman, Nebraska.

• Autumn temps arrived in Tarkio on Thursday morning as summer’s low mark of 38 degrees was recorded at 5:27 a.m.

• Orville Schoonover of Tarkio will manage the Mayfair theater when it reopens in Shenandoah, Iowa, Sunday according to an announcement by Virgil Harbison, who has taken over the theater. The Schoonovers plan to move to Shenandoah soon.

September 5, 1974

• The three-story building in Tarkio which has housed the elementary, junior high, and even high schools at different times since 1912 is being demolished this week. Bob Madget Company of St. Joseph is doing the demolition.

• The Tarkio High School Indian football team consists of 41 athletes. The team will face the Rock Port Blue Jays in the first game of the season.

• Dr. Robert Ashler of Hamburg, Dr. Wallace Carpenter of Rock Port, and Dr. E.L. Niedermeyer of Tarkio will participate as instructors in the Clinic on Athletic Medicine for coaches and trainers on September 7 at the Tarkio College campus. The clinic is co-sponsored by the college and Community Hospital Association of Fairfax.

• Sales at U Save Mart in Tarkio: Clairol Nice ‘N Easy hair coloring lotion, $1.39; Tampax tampons, $1.37; coffee mugs, 4 for 67¢; shoe polish, 2 for 53¢; box of 100 envelopes, 33¢; and Sylvania inside frosted light bulbs of all watts, 6 for $1.00.

• A course in the Contemporary British Novel will be offered by Professor Robert Davis at Tarkio College during the fall term. The course will concentrate on the novel in Britain since 1930.

• After two full days of golf with 300 golfers taking to the course, the CommuniTEE Benefit Golf Classic at Tarkio Golf Course raised $53,200 for Community Hospital in Fairfax. This was the eighth annual event sponsored by the Development Council of Community Hospital Association.

• AT&T Cable Services, formerly TCI, announces the arrival of AT&T Digital Cable, a new TV entertainment product available to customers in Tarkio.

• Ask Elsie Fae: “Friday night when I sat down to enjoy my newly installed 800 or so cable channels, it took me a solid 25 minutes to turn on the TV. The next day, I complained to Gayla and she sympathized saying, ‘I know, so many buttons, so little time.’ However, I’m improving. Last night, after only two days of practice, I had things under control in five minutes flat.”

• The Tarkio R-I Board of Education is hosting a free hog roast to celebrate the district’s recent Missouri School Improvement Program review of “Accredited with Distinction in Performance.”

• Sprint has donated $6,000 to Heartland Recreation Center in Tarkio. The generous donation came just in time to kick off the grand opening of the rec center’s swimming pool.
