Rock Port High School football kicked off its 2024 season Friday, August 30, with a home opener against the Pattonsburg Panthers.

The Jays got off to a slow start with a bad snap. This led to a fumble, setting Pattonsburg up for their first touchdown. Pattonsburg then recovered an onside kick giving them possession again, but freshman Logan Ellis came up big with an interception and return to give the Blue Jays the ball back. The Jays struggled to get anything going before turning the ball over on downs. The Panthers took advantage and put six more points on the board, making it 0-12. The Jays finally started moving the ball down the field with seven rushing plays and a pass before quarterback Corbyn Jakub would scramble 20 yards to put Rock Port on the board with just under a minute left in the first quarter, making the score 6-12 Pattonsburg.

To start the second quarter, the Pattonsburg quarterback would hit a deep ball for a touchdown making the score 6-18. The Panthers kicked another squib kick down the field where Jack Meyerkorth would pick it up and take it back 55 yards for a Blue Jay touchdown. The two point conversion was good, making the score 14-18 Panthers. Three plays later, Corbyn Jakub would intercept the ball and return it to the Panthers’ 4 yard line setting up the Jays’ next rushing touchdown by Brock Holmes for the first lead of the game. This was the first of five touchdowns by Brock. Holmes’ two point conversion was good, making the score 22-18. Pattonsburg went back to the air, completing a pass that went 40 yards, to put the Panthers back on top 22-24. The Jays would battle back on a 13 play drive with two penalties to find the end zone giving the Jays the lead once again 30-24. This would take them to halftime.

Following halftime the scoring didn’t stop for either team as the Panthers would score 28 points in the third quarter and only eight in the fourth. The Blue Jays would score 24 points in the third and eight in the fourth, making the final score 62-60 to end the game.

The Blue Jays will be on the road to Stanberry, Missouri, this Friday, September 6. The game starts at 7:00 p.m.
